Based on a true story, this book accounts of nine-year-old Sonam and her sisters leaving their village forever to make the dangerous journey from Tibet to India, where they attend a special school for young Tibetans in exile. Under Chinese occupation and time, they established their ruling in Tibet in education and religion. Going to school during this time was very expensive and because of it, many Tibetan families couldn't afford to send their children to school. During this time, many children of Tibet have taken a journey to India from Tibet for the purpose of pursuing quality education in which they were deprived of. The journey to India was dangerous as it was forbidden to travel without a permit and Chinese permission. Additionally, the children of Tibet hope for the better future of learning their cultural heritage and identity besides quality education in general modern studies. Under the guidance of the His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he has hopes that with education the Tibetan children are receiving in India, they will be able to return to their homeland to free their country from Chinese rule and to maintain and preserve the Tibetan culture, history, and identity. I believe it is definitely important to know where you come from because culture is everything that defines us in the way we live. No matter what or where you come from, you should never forget the importance of culture in which you live in. Education is crucial to understanding our world because education is the key to success as well as being able to solve world problems in which we have in today's present. No child should be deprive of education and this book demonstrates the struggles in which Tibetan children are deprive of education and what it takes for them to receive quality education. All in all, this book is very enjoyable as it takes the reader into the importance of quality education and the preservation of a culture and identity.… (mer)
