Recensioner

First let it be made clear that this series makes no ridiculous claims. It does not asure you that you can become a karate expert in a matter of weeks, nor does it try to convince you that you can learn to break boards in few easy lessons.

This is the fifth book in the Practical Karate series. Like its predecessors, it is a categorized collection of self-defense situations and recommended karate responses. All methods described are workable responses based on meeting an unarmed, single male assailant. It might be of additional interest to women students of karate to study the fundamentals found in boks 1-4, even though these are basically books for male students.

Mastery of the responses in this text will not make the reader invincible in personal encounters, but it will cetrtainly better prepare her should defense of her life or that of others become necessary. But only practice will bring results.

Masatoshi Nakayama, Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association, and Donn F. Draeger, a well-known instructor of combative arts, have authored this book to porvide a system of self-defense for the busy individual.

'Here you are girls, just what you've needed-a sure-fire way to ward off the unwanted attention....I am certain that this book well serves its purpose...'-(D.R.)The Japan Times

'(The book) has 118 pages, is amply illustrated, and should at all costs be kept away from the little woman...'-Tookyo Hilton Hotel Magazine

'The authors do not purport to turn out a legion of females Karate experts. They have selected responses for the aveage woman....The authors are generous with advice and warning. They have worked out terse descriptions of the action in each instance so that it can be rapidly grasped.'-The Mainichi Shimbun

'Here then are the correct responses, none of them delicate and none of them really improper....the authors make no attempt to daze their readers with the high-flown technique of top karate experts. The instuction is simple, the picture explicit. The average woman should be able, as a result and after a little practice, to extricate herself from the most delicate of situations or brutal assault.'-The Straits Times (Hong Kong)

Nakayama: We select here several techniques you will be able to master with comparative ease.
Draeger: The few minutes a day you must spend in practice will never be wasted.
-quotes by the authors from Practical Karate: Fundamentals

'A first approach to an encyclopaedic treatment of the subject. Draeger and Smith have endeavored to cover the fighting arts of China, Okinawa, Korea, Japan, India, Pakistan, Burma; Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. In each they have sought to tell something of the history, techniques, and famous practitioners of the arts. Unfortunately, some of these are secret, have died out, or exist only in relatively inaccessible areas. Profusely illsutrated, it is the work of two recognized authorities in the field...It will remain the defintive text in its field for the foreseeable future.'-Choice

The modern Bujutsu are well-defined, highly pragmatic forms of self-defence, both armed and unarmed, that have been skillfully adapted to meet contemporary needs by experts in the classical traditions. In contrast, accoridng to the author, the story of the modern budo-and especially the sports-oriented of kendo judo and karate-is one both of adaptation and perversion of the classical ideals. He explodes a number of myths about modern budo, critisizing the gulf that often separates these systems from their traditional essence as spiritual disciplines.

from dust jacket

This book, the third and final volume of the Martial Arts and Ways of Japan series, clearly defines the history, aims, and techniques of the martial disciplines that have developed in Japan since the end of feudal rule in 1968.

The fifteen major forms discussed in Modern Bujutsu and Budo include such well-known budo, or marital ways, as kendo, judo, karate-do, and aiki-do. Also described are others that are little known even in Japan-the bujutsu, or marital arts, which are used primarily by the Japanese police and defense establishment.

Like their classical counterparts created by the professional warrior class of medieval Japan, the modern bujutsu are well-defined, highly pragmatic forms of self-defense both armed and unarmed. They have been developed by men who are also experts in the classical traditions, the methods and techniques of which have been skillfully adapted to the conditions of contemporary society. The classical art of stick-fighting, for example, has been adapted for the modern police truhncheon. The art of rapidly immobilizing and tying a struggling assailant without injury has also been adapted for police use, for it is ofter much quicker and more efficient than using handcuffs.

The modern budo, on the other hand, are the best known-and most misunderstood-of the Japanese martial disciplines. The story of the development of kendo, judo, karate-do, and other sport-oriented budo forms is one both of adaptation and of perversion of the classical ideals.

The author, who knows the modern budo from the inside, explodes a number of romantic, inflated myths concerning their origins and aims. In detailing the historical development, theory, and techniques of each discipline he exposes the wide gulf that often separates the modern budo from the traditional essence of budo as spiritual disciplines that were designed as comprehensive systems of self-mastery-not combat or competition. Many of the contemporary budo have degenerated into mere displays of technical profiency or physical strength or into nothing more than competitive sports.

The combination of a clear, authoritative text and authentic photographs of leading contemporary exponents of the modern martial disciplines in action makes Modern Bujutsu and Budo a unique and invaluable addition to the library of everyone interested in the martial arts or in the history and culture of Japan. With its companion volumes Classical Bujutsu and Classical Budo, it comprises the most comprehensive study of Japan's martial culture in English.

Donn F. Draeger, once a regular officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a research historian, author, and lecturer on Asian martial disciplines, in which he held a large number of expert ranks and teaching licenses. He traveled extensively in Asia and made Tokyo his base for a number of years. Mr. Draeger was technical director of the journal Martial Arts International and a contributor to a number of other periodicals. Among his numerous books are Asian Fighting Arts and Weapons and Fighting Arts of the Indonesian Archipelago. Mr. Draeger died in October 1982.
