The El Dorado Trail tells the story of the 49ers who got to California by going across Mexico. This book was one of The American Trials Series. Unlike many of the other trails in the series that followed an exact route the El Dorado Trail was really a number of routes across Mexico some that started in Vera Cruz and others right on the US-Mexico border. I thought I knew a lot about the California Gold Rush but this part was new to me. I knew about the overland trails from the Missouri River to California and the ways by sea but this was new to me. If I have a complaint it would be that there were no maps provided in the book. I had to stop reading several times and look elsewhere to see where some of the places mentioned were.… (mer)

According to Ferol Egan, "Thomas S. Martin narrative is printed...by permission....of the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley. This is the first time this oral history of one of John Charles Fr`emont's men has been transcribed, annotated, and printed in the complete version. As such, it may be the only remaining original document regarding Fr`emont's third and fourth expeditions."

A tale of early California, while still under Mexican control and the taking of it by Fr`emont's band of Americans, native Americans, and a handful of Frenchmen. At the time under Spanish control, and inhabited by them, native Americans, and a few brave settlers, it is a harrowing account of some battles, both against the Spanish and some Indian tribes, as well as accounts of coming up the remains of the Donner party, and getting stuck and terrible snowstorms themselves and losing many men of their band due to freezing to death and starvation. He recounts that after portions of his band got separated in the storm, and finding them later, that those other portions must survived on the bodies of their dead companions, but would never own up to it. It is a good first hand account of a early part of American history out west and the ordeals they endured.

This is a hardcover book, printed by private press, and limited edition (my copy is #134).

Understanding the history of the West involves knowing about explorations that followed the Lewis & Clark trek and the subsequent journeys of mountain men. After leading two expeditions into the West in 1843 to 1844, John C. Frémont http://www.longcamp.com/proc.html became a national hero. His travels led to published reports of the successful journeys into relatively unknown regions; surveying, mapping, and describing the Rockies, the Great Basin, the route to Oregon, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Ferol Egan's biography provides an unvarnished view of Frémont, his courtship and marriage to Jesse Benton, his relationship with political powerhouse and father-in-law, Thomas Hart Benton, all of his five expeditions, and his rise and fall from public acclaim.
