Basics: 2004, softcover, 320 pages, 295 color photos, 273 species, range map for each bird; English and Portuguese

Of the 400 birds found within and around the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, 273 of them are illustrated in this book by excellent color photos. These well lit, colorful photos show the bird in a reasonable size, unlike many other photo guides that cram multiple small pictures onto a page. Each bird receives one photo which takes up the top half of the page. Only a couple dozen birds have two photos.

Relying on the photos, and limited by the size of the elongated narrow book, the text is very brief, ranging from only 3-7 lines. Sometimes a short description of the bird and voice is given; other times only the natural history is mentioned. Either way, this information is very generalized.

Although this book is not a field guide and will not cover 100% of the Sao Paulo birds, it will still be very useful for your trip to this city, especially if your visit is limited to the city and its parks. Its usefulness is due to the quality photos and, by default since there is little else published or accessible a birder can use for this region.

Everything in this book is written in both English and Portuguese.
