The protagonist, Ivanov, escapes from prison, and miraculously survives years in the harsh wilderness, learning survival skills previously unknown to him: finding food and water, hunting animals and preserving the meat for the winter, creating shelter from the sometimes subzero temperatures. Ivanov’s discovery of a crashed plane is a blessing at first but with eventual unexpected consequences. After being spotted by a family on a picnic, Ivanov decides on a plan to throw authorities off the scent of his true identity. What eventuates is a fascinating twist of fate and a surprising insight into the humanity behind the official face of the KGB.

Biography

As a boy, Russell Evans tried to stow away on a ship in search of adventure but, to his disappointment, the ship never left the port. After finishing school, his quest for adventure was more successful when he got a job as a cabin boy on a tramp* shipping wheat from Russia’s Black Sea ports. This was at a time of famine in Russia, and experiencing this left Evans with a hatred of dictatorships, and a respect for the fortitude of the people who suffered in the hands of the dictatorship.

*A tramp steamer, or tramp for short, is any ship which does not have a fixed schedule or published ports of call (as opposed to freight liners).
