(show) Lyndsay Faye signs in San Diego Lyndsay Faye’s gritty series featuring Copper Star Timothy Wilde reaches its thrilling conclusion with The Fatal Flame. We were first introduced to Wilde, an officer in the newly organized police force of nineteenth-century New York City, in The Gods of Gotham, an Edgar Award nominee for Best First Mystery, which was followed by Seven for a Secret. Now in The Fatal Flame, an arsonist threatens Alderman Robert Symmes, a corrupt and powerful leader. Wilde is reluctant to become involved, especially because his brother, Valentine, announces his intention to run against Symmes. Meanwhile, an orphan girl may hold the key to stopping the fires that are terrorizing the city, and it’s up to Wilde and Mercy Underhill, the love of his life, to find out what the young girl knows before the entire city burns to the ground.

Lyndsay Faye Signs in San Diego Lyndsay Faye explores the world of late 19th century New York and the newly-formed NYPD in Seven for a Secret, sequel to her Edgar-nominated The Gods of Gotham. From Nicole’s review: “This mystery covers a very important and often overlooked time in American history when ‘free-born’ citizens of color and freed slaves were commonly kidnapped from the streets of the Northern states and sold to the South. Not only was this practice common, but it was also, for all intents and purposes, legal.” The rest of Nicole’s review may be found here.

"It's been almost twenty years since Caleb Carr's bestselling Olde New York crime novel, The Alienist, was published, and I cant count the number of times since then that someone has asked me if I can recommend a suspense story anything 'like it.' Well, New York has inspired lots of terrific thrillers, but I've just stumbled on one of the worthiest successors yet. Lyndsay Faye's novel, The Gods of Gotham."—Maureen Corrigan, NPR's Fresh Air
