I'm not a big fan of the Harry Potter movies, but my daughter liked this book, and I'm always up for some behind-the-scenes anecdotes, so why not?

The behind-the-scenes was the best part and takes up most of the book. The family bits were okay, but the stint in rehab comes off as way too pretentious and really cements Felton as a Slytherin. Still, he has my best wishes for his recovery and my gratitude for being an otherwise amiable companion on a long drive.… (mer)

Tom Felton, AKA Drayco Malfoy in the Harry Potter stories tells interesting behind the scenes stories about the making of the movies. The book is interesting, and Felton’s narration is really good. Unlike some tell all books, Tom Felton is fair and friendly to all of his colleagues. The only disparagement Felton delivers is of himself in a humorous self deprecating way. The last part of the book is a departure from the rest of it. In the last part Felton talks about his substance abuse problems and the time he spend in rehab. Rather than being Hollywood-dramaish, it’s really informative. After all of that, Felton offers his own advice to readers (and, in my case listeners) about the value of recognizing weaknesses in ourselves and not feeling ashamed to seek help. I found this very helpful, and I imagine more readers than he could realize have been inspired and helped by this part of “Beyond the Wand.” This book was thoroughly enjoyable to listen to, a book any Harry Potter book fan would enjoy.… (mer)
