Being a YA librarian, or serving the young adult population in general, is not an easy task. Right away, this book states what most people think is obvious: today’s young adults are different from adults or children. However, many libraries lump young adults with either group, which means they aren’t getting the attention they deserve. This book aims to change that.

This book also aims to showcase how to develop and thus implement successful programs and services for young adults. Along with excellent information, the book also offers a References and Resource Guide, which offers evaluation tools, checklists on a variety of topics, and other kind of worksheets. At the end of each section, a helpful list of resources from the chapter is offered, so readers can read more if they so choose.

For new YA librarians, this is an invaluable resource, since many library schools don’t offer courses on young adults, and even for more established YA librarians, this book may offer some new and valuable suggestions. Although it’s not the most exciting read, this book is necessary for YA librarians to go through the process of planning, implementing, and then evaluating YA programs and events. Recommended.… (mer)
