Born Cecil Louis Troughton Smith on August 27, 1899, in Cairo, Egypt, where his father was a government official, C. S. Forester grew up mainly in England. He was educated at Dulwich College, studying medicine briefly before decidint to become a writer. Forester moved to the United States before visa mer the start of World War II, and lived in Berkeley, California, until his death in 1966. Although Forester was a journalist, a novelist and a Hollywood scriptwriter, he is probably best known for his historical fiction, particularly the series of novels that feature Horatio Hornblower. The eleven-book series begins with Mr. Midshipmen Hornblower, in which the seventeen-year old Hornblower joins the British navy in 1793, just as the Napoleonic Wars are about to begin. Hornblower's continuing adventures, as well as his advancement to the highest ranks of the navy, are chronicled in further books, including Beat to Quarters, Flying Colours, Commodore Hornblower, Lord Hornblower, The Happy Return, and A Ship of the Line, for which Forester recived the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1939. Several of Forester's novels were made into films, most notably Payment Deferred (his first novel published in 1926), Eagle Squadron, The Commandos (the movie title was The Commandos Strike at Dawn), Captain Horatio Hornblower, Sink the Bismarck!, and The African Queen, starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. Forester's nonfiction includes The Age of Fighting Sail: The Story of the Naval War of 1812, as well as biographies of Lord Nelson, Napoleon, Josephine, and King Louis XIV. Kadett Hornblower går till sjöss av C. S. Forester

En roddbåt i Spitheads hamn är på väg ut till H.M.S. (Hans Majestäts Skepp) Justinian en stormig dag i England. I aktern sitter den sjösjuke kadetten Horatio Hornblower, på väg till sitt livs största äventyr. Ombord på Justinian får Hornblower lära sig allt en officer bör veta för att göra karriär i flottan. Kaptenen fattar tycke för Hornblower och ordnar förflyttning till Hans majestäts fregatt Indefatigable med kommendörkapten sir Edward Pellew som befäl.

Hornblower blir hårt prövad och hinner föra befäl över prisfartyg, utmärka sig i sjöslag, strida tillsammans med marinsoldater i Frankrike, vara krigsfånge i Spanien och bli befordrad till löjtnant innan han har engelsk mark under fötterna.… (mer)

Hornblower löjtnant vid flottan av C. S. Forester

Hornblower är femte löjtnant på HMS linjeskeppet Renown. Det finns inte många chanser att få befordran då. Men snart dyker det rätta ögonblicket upp att glänsa inför överordnade. Kommendörkapten Sawyer skadar sig allvarligt och blir förklarad oförmögen att föra befäl. Den förste löjtnanten (som blir tillförordnad befälhavare) är vek och måste hela tiden rådfråga sina underordnade vad som bör göras.

Renowns uppdrag är att ta över ett fort i Västindien som kan störa Englands handel. Buckland (förste löjtnant) är osäker om han bör genomföra uppdraget eller segla till Kingston, Jamaica och lämna över fartyget till en kommendörkapten. Hornblower uppmuntrar honom att genomföra uppdraget och det leder till att Hornblower får leda en landsättningsstyrka som med stor framgång erövrar fortet. När Hornblower kommer hem till England utses han till kapten trots sin låga grad.… (mer)

First published in 1935, C.S. Forester's classic romantic adventure is a tale of opposites attracted. Allnut and Rose, a disreputable Cockney and an English spinster missionary, wend their way down a river in Central Africa in a rickety, asthmatic steam launch, and are gradually joined together in a mission of retaliation against the Germans. Fighting time, heat, malaria and bullets, the two have a dramatic rapprochement before the explosive ending of the book. This tale of unlikely love is thrilling and funny and ultimately satisfying.
