Old fashioned edition, with a frame around the text on each page and red printing on the title page. Shows several differences from the "Revised Ritual" of 1962, including a disagreement about whether the door should actually be opened to check that the Tyler is guarding it, or just used for the exchange of secret knocks. Some practices are explicitly criticized in the later volume (such as taking the Lord's name "in vain" by declaring the Lodge open "in the name of the Great Architect of the Universe"): I wonder if I have stumbled on some arcane schism here. A knock with the gavel is indicated amusingly by a little picture of a gavel, which in the 1962 rite is replaced by "k... with his g...". The Tyler is to be armed with a "d...n s...d", which is more helpful to cowan readers than the 1962 rite, whose "d... s..." might be mistakenly supposed to refer to (say) a dead squirrel.

Was it worth 50p in a charity shop? Possibly not, though the advertisements at the back for other obscure masonic volumes make it a little more interesting than some editions. There's a curious tantalizing quality in the catalogue, until I remember that I really couldn't ever actually want a copy of the "Consecration of Viceroy Eusebius [Red Cross of Constantine]", or "The Metropolitan Working of Royal Arch Masonry (rubricated red-line waistcoat pocket edition)", or Rev. J. T. Lawrence's tome on "The Perfect Ashlar, and other Masonic Symbols". And in these liberal days, I wonder what could be made of the "Secret Monitor, or Brotherhood of David and Jonathan". I guess if you're a misogynist and are looking for a boys' secret club for grown-ups, the priesthood is only available to the celibate. I know there's supposed to be a charitable intent, but surely a genuine philanthropist would just cut the crap and join the Rotarians.
