When You Give a Duke a Diamond (Jewels of the Ton… av Shana Galen

Yuck.

Every character is insufferable.

He's a duke who's too full of himself and claims to love her, but not only won't he respect her, he disrespects her and calls her names.

She's a courtesan (aka a polite term for an expensive prostitute), and she's angry because he won't marry her (because, you know, she's a prostitute). But instead of explaining, she's just offended.

Also, his fiancee just got murdered (not even an hour went by, her body is still lying there undiscovered, they're fully aware of this), and they're sitting there having deep sexual tension and arguing about how she shouldn't address him as Will, but use his proper title. And that's just a small example of the frustrating aspects in this book. I understand it's meant to be light-hearted, but come on!

I just can't. It's a DNF.
There are too many good books out there to put up with this.… (mer)

My Fair Katie (Misfortunes Favorites Book 2) av Shana Galen

I love these books! This is a series you need to read in order because it features a witch’s curse on three thirteen-year-old boys. Each book features one of those boys, and it also features part of a way to undo the curse – each clue building on the last. This book features Henry and I had difficulty warming up to him, but I finally did. 😊 Henry has a gambling addiction and I love the way the author made us feel Henry’s struggle and the draw of the cards and dice. His struggle was real – and we felt it.

Henry Lewis, the Duke of Carlisle, was drawn to any form of wagering all his life. Lately, it had become an obsession, he absolutely couldn’t walk away. So, on his thirtieth birthday – just as the witch’s curse decreed – he lost the very last thing of value he owned. Unfortunately, his properties weren’t entailed and there was nothing to stop him from gambling them away – so he did just that. He has no place to live and no income to support himself. What’s a duke to do? Well, he'll visit his mother while he sorts that out. Fortunately, his mother owns, in her own right, the dower house at the Carlisle country estate.

Lady Katherine (Katie) Malfort, daughter of the Marquess of Shrewsbury, is being punished by her father simply because she tried to take a little control over her life. Katie has been forced to hide her face by wearing a heavy veil. She’s been told she is ugly and will scare people because she has a large birthmark on her face. Since she has heard it her entire life, she believes it to be true. Her father banished her to his newly acquired Carlisle Hall that was formerly owned by a man her father loathes. It has been her father’s mission to destroy Carlisle and she has no idea why.

When Katie first meets Henry, she berates him for his lack of care for his tenants long before he lost the property – and she refuses to help him even though he is stranded on the side of the road. She does notice that he never stared at her birthmark, he didn’t comment on it, nor make the sign of the cross. Over the next weeks, Henry helps Katie to become more self-confident and Katie helps Henry discover why her father hates Henry’s family so much.

I enjoyed seeing Katie spread her wings and Henry fight his addiction. I loved that Katie could love Henry knowing his addiction and was willing to help him fight it – and even still love him when he had a relapse. I also loved seeing them get the second clue to break the spell! Rory’s book will be next and the final clue will be revealed. Once they have all of the clues, there will surely be a cost for them to break the spell. Will they be willing to pay the price?

I recommend this book as an excellent read and I hope you will love it as much as I do. Happy Reading!!

Just not feeling this story right now and the plot just doesn't intrigue me right now. Its not really working for me so I am going to pass on it right now but might revisit.

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley, all opinions are my own. The King and Vi is the first book in Shana Galen's exciting new series Misfortunes Favourites. To celebrate his 30th birthday George Oxley, Marquess of Kingston known to his friends as King goes out drinking and gets into a fight at a public house called the Silver Unicorn, owned by Violet Baker. The fight cause a lot of damage and Violet goes to King's house to collect repayment for the damage. She arrives to find his household in an uproar, King's father, the Duke has been found guilty of treason and every one King owes money to is trying to collect before the Crown takes it all. Violet is determined to have him pay what he owes even if he has to work it off so she allows him to accompany her back to the Silver Unicorn. This book was really fun to read, witches, curses, evil villains, an exciting battle, adorable orphans and a delightful enemies to lovers story line.
