Full Review on my blog!

Wow, what a series! I didn’t even know how to write this review.

Lion Heart begins with Scarlet’s imprisonment by Prince John. She has been locked away for months and after she escapes she reunites with her Grandmother, rather than Rob, to figure out Prince John’s next move. This is the crux of what I didn’t like about this book. My favorite thing about Scarlet and Lady Thief were the interactions, and camaraderie, between Scarlet and Rob and in Lion Heart there was less of that.

I can’t say a lot about the plot without getting into spoiler territory, but I loved this book so, so much. I loved that Scarlet didn’t wait around to be saved, she didn’t sit around wringing her hands and feeling sorry for herself, she leapt into the action, and used her intelligence and her physical abilities to help herself and those around her. She and Robin made my heart ache in the best possible ways, and together, they were unstoppable. Scarlet is the kind of female character I like to see in YA. Scarlet is fierce, independent, loyal, and despite the odds being stacked against her she still perseveres and doesn’t compromise her own morals to reach her goals.

Lion Heart was the perfect end to a fantastic trilogy. I highly recommend it! I loved this series. If you haven’t read it yet I seriously suggest a binge read!

Full Review on my blog!

I loved it almost as much as the first, but not as much.

Lady Thief was a fast paced, emotion filled adventure that left me completely breathless. I don’t think I have ever read a sequel that was just so much more amazing than the first. And Scarlet was so amazing that it was hard to top, but this one does it.

So Scarlet and Robin are back. Only problem, is Gisbourne and this time he’s got the Prince with him. Now with the seat for sheriff of Nottingham on the line, along with the future of every one in the county, our heroes are going to have to see just how much they are willing to sacrifice.

Discovering more about Scarlet and the tension over the tournament was interesting, but when we were nearing the end something heart-shattering happened. I still can’t believe it. What a heartbreaking ending! Just when you think that these characters will catch a break and have a moment of happiness the world comes and takes it all from them.

There was action, drama, deceit, passion, love and hate and a whole bunch of other stuff and I loved it! Not to mention the huge plot twist. There was that same great writing that got me hooked with Scarlet and I can not wait to read the end of this series. I’m hoping for a happily ever after. I highly recommend it!

Scarlet took a bit getting used to - her voice is that of a lower class English girl and A.C. Gaughen writes in completely in first person, from Scarlet's point of view. Once I could read fluently without lamenting her accent, it was a delight to read. Who is Scarlet and why is she so fearful of Gisbourne? What secrets does her past hold that makes Robin Hood fearful of trusting her? All valid questions, all artfully dodged by the cunning and clever Scarlet.

Scarlet is a love story, an adventure tale, a re-imagining of a tale the English speaking world grew up with and it is crafted with love and is masterfully told. I, like A.C. Guaghen, never really cared for wimpy, washed out Marion - her character was never fully developed and always full of insipid flaws. Why should the beloved Robin Hood be stuck with a fair maiden he has to save over and over? How can she be a real partner to him if she can't manage to do anything more than cower behind him or run away? Scarlet is the answer - a strong female character for the testosterone filled bardic tales of Robin and his Merry Men. It's always all about the men but hopefully Scarlet can change that!

What I truly love about her, though, is she is completely female. When she gets upset, she's not above tears (though she tries to avoid them) and sometimes, she just wants a little comfort. She doesn't seek to play games with the guys, she'd honestly prefer they just ignore the fact that she's a girl, but when push comes to shove, she must admit what she truly feels, to both herself, and the band. And she does it in a way that isn't sappy and is thoroughly courageous. I cannot wait to read the sequel!
