Om författaren

Jean Genet was born in Paris, France on December 19, 1910. He was an illegitimate child abandoned by his mother, raised by Public Assistance, and sent to live with foster parents at the age of seven. At the age of 10 he was accused of stealing. He spent five years at the Mettray Reformatory and as visa mer a young adult spent time in various European prisons for vagrancy, homosexuality, theft, and smuggling. He began writing in 1942, while in prison. His works include Our Lady of the Flowers, Miracle of the Rose, and The Thief's Journal. In 1948, he was convicted of burglary for the 10th time and condemned to automatic life imprisonment. However, by 1947, his works had gained attention from such writers as Jean-Paul Sartre, André Gide, and Jean Cocteau. After the sentence, they petitioned for his release and a pardon was granted. In the late 1940s, Genet began to write for the theatre, but several of his plays were too controversial to be performed in France. His plays included The Maids, Deathwatch, The Blacks, and The Balcony. He died on April 15, 1986. (Bowker Author Biography) visa färre

Allmänna fakta

Maybe Goodreads needs to come up with a bookshelf called Want to Want to Read. I feel really sad to be putting this book aside, but am just not enjoying it. The prose is beautiful, sentence by sentence, but at the paragraph level it is really an ugly mess. We get tedious, in-depth accounts of Querelle deciding whether or not to continue smiling, and then we don't even find out his decision as we are now too busy imagining how a "youngster" would feel if they were miraculously transmogrified into a crocodile.

I tried the Streatham translation, maybe I'll have a go at the Hollo version in the future, but first I'll try a different Genet book, I think, to try to figure out what all the fuss is about.

I understand that this work may not to be to everyone's liking. Some may find the subject matter and descriptions difficult to get around. However I, like many reviewers, would say this is a masterpiece. The prose is beautiful and like no other. The story is part dream, part autobiography, part social statement, and part fantasy. All are mingled together in this wonderful melange. If you appreciate great writings and great writers do not miss this work.

In these brilliant essays Genet exposes "the mystery of prisons for children", the intelligence of Jean Cocteau, and the beauty found in the studio of Alberto Giacometti. However, the most delightful of all the essays in this short collection is his exquisite exploration of the world of the tightrope walker.
