I will definitely be re-reading this book, I loved it. I found everything about it to be great from the story line and the writing style to the characters and the pace. This author is an absolute must read. I can't wait to read more form her.

I almost smile. This strange, violent girl—I kind of like her. “It’s too bad we can’t be friends because of our impending gruesome murders.”

I received an ARC from NetGalley (was contacted about the blog tour afterwards) in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own. Also, the quote I used may have changed or been altered in some way, but I am quoting from what I received.

Questions, questions, and more questions. I actually struggled with what rating to give this book, because I did enjoy the story, but there were a few things that bothered me. Despite those pesky problems, I really want to know where the story will go from here, so I'll definitely be reading the next one!

I'm all about a slow reveal. I actually savor the moments leading up to the big thing, but when those questions are never answered, I feel deflated and disappointed. I need some issues to be resolved before the end of the book, and I get a little frustrated when every answer seems to be reserved for later. Risen ends with way too many questions and very few potential answers.

I also struggled with the ease in which Charlie "trusts her feelings." I just don't know how accommodating I would be to a vampire that just assisted in the abduction of a family member. I know for the sake of the story, there has to be a little give so things can progress, but she seemed to forget all the bad a little too easily. Yes, she mentions her brain malfunctioning in that area, but thinking and doing are not the same. Once we get past the initial "don't trust the vampire," it was a little easier to go with the flow, but I did grind my teeth a few times when things fell into place without resistance or conflict.

Sebastian is eager to protect Charlie for reasons, but more of his backstory would have been helpful (what he's able to share anyways). The added content at the end of the book with his perspective was only a little enlightening. I liked him as a character, but never felt like I knew anything about him.

There were a lot of surprises that I wasn't expecting, and I'm not sure how I feel about them because questions. I don't even know if I'm supposed to believe or understand what I think I know. I'm also not sure why everyone else isn't freaking out if it's true. Then there is the mysterious Rachel, a person with actual answers, but she isn't sharing them right now.

All in all, I'm curious what is going to happen next. I'll definitely be reading the next book in the series, and I'm assuming that is when I'll start getting some answers (at least I hope so). This book has so much going for it, and I don't say that lightly. It's been ages since I've read a vampire book, and this synopsis intrigued me enough to give it a shot. I wasn't disappointed by the story, or the characters really, but by a lack of information.

Opal, Charlie, Sebastian, Matteo, Delaney... all very interesting characters that I would love to know more about. If you're looking for a vampire book to shake things up a bit, I recommended looking into Risen. Despite my issues, I was hooked on the story!

I really liked this one- the thing I found the greatest about it was that the kids were real (aside from the reincarnated samurai thing, of course). There was no need for sex, drinking, drugs- quite refreshing.

According to me a Prologue or the 1st Chapter of a book is THE reflection - SO it must capture my attention from page 1 I will continue a few more chapters to give the Book a fair chance to change my mind!

Herewith my review!

Prologue OR Chapter 1

This is a special kind a book, . Although maybe too short and I wish there were more pages elaborating on some of the scenes, but otherwise this was a perfect good read, it is emotional and I needed to take a few breathers between the chapters.

Type of Characters and my choices according to pictures :

James Bay - Scars
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdQdcuW_YeE
Ashlyn was mostly abused mentally but sometimes also physically by her Stepfather since she was 10, this abuse was imprinted into her memory that she was worthless and imperfect, she never thought people can actually love or care about her.

The only time she stood up to her stepfather was the day she left home, after her stepfather broke a few of her ribs and set all her things ablaze in a backyard bonfire while her mother just stood by and watched. I think the last bit of her love for her mother died that night but also because her mother allowed the abuse since she was 10, personally I think the mother was also abused but this book is not out of the mothers perspective, and in all due respect mothers are there to protect their children, no matter at what cost!

Jamie Scott - Unbreakable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZAs5K7L8KA

Parents causing emotional wounds do not realize that those wounds will stay with that person for years or maybe forever!

After leaving her home Ash spend many nights sleeping in the car before she had enough money to board a room.

Ashlyn is caring and honest BUT she feels worthless and scared, having terrible nightmares and sometimes even living the nightmares during the day when someone accidentally touch her in a certain way or when she spill or break something by mistake, always checking doors ensuring that nobody locked her in.

Ash and Emily a co-worker at a coffee shop becomes friends one night when Ash tells her a bit about her past and her tattoo, Emily suggests that Ashlyn cover up the ugly tattoo from her previous boyfriend on her arm but when Ash say she cant afford it, Emily suggest that she should not worry as her brother Lane owns a Tattoo shop and he owes Emily a favor.

Relationship development & Chapter Development

Lane is the perfect tattoo hero type, Lane biggest responsibility is he is a single dad at 26, which he hides from Ash, Lane takes his responsibility very serious, still looking out for Emily although she is already 21.

Lanes Thoughts - I’m overprotective of my family to a fault and Im terrified of not living up to the man my dad expected me to become

*** or ***
Protect your family. Like the ink on my arms, my dads partner s words are written on my heart, the syllables pulsing in time with each beat, nobody hurts what belongs to me

Because of the tattoo Ash and Lane cross paths a few more times and although they are attracted to each other both of them are fighting this attraction, so this is not quick and painless relationship. Ashlyn and Lane have many insecurities and they trust only a few, but when they do trust they give everything they have to protect the friend or an dog for that matter.

In the book there’s a scene of painting the flat which made me cry, and yes Lane also stole my heart with this scene, Lane is a special kind of hero, who helps Ash realize just how special she is as a person!

Paragraphs I loved→

Ashlyn thoughts – ‘I have nothing, I can pay nothing! Even if I could, People have been taken pieces of me since a was a kid. If I give anymore away, there might not be anything left’

Tom Odell - Heal
