Om författaren

Margaret Rumer Godden was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Sussex, England. She was nine months old when her family moved to India, where her father ran a shipping line. She returned to London at age 20 to learn how to teach dance to children, and opened a school back in India. Returning to England while she visa mer was pregnant, she wrote her first book, "Chinese Puzzle," published in 1936. Her marriage to a stockbroker, Laurence Sinclair Foster, ended in 1941, leaving her penniless. In an effort to pay off her former husband's debts, Godden moved her family into a mountain cottage where she ran a school, made herbal teas for sale, and wrote books. Another novel of India, "The River," published in 1949, was one of her most acclaimed books and was made into a film by Jean Renoir in 1951. She returned to England to stay in 1945. Rumer Godden was the author of more than 60 books, including novels, short story collections, poetry, plays and non-fiction. She published her 21st novel, "Cromartie vs. the God Shiva," in 1997. Rumer Godden died a year later on November 8, 1998, in Thornhill, Scotland, at the age of 90. (Bowker Author Biography) visa färre

The book is a charming memoir. I hesitate to call it an autobiography. Jon and Rumer Godden wrote this memoir jointly of their childhood in India. They lived in India during the First World War, and their memory seems excellent.
There is an innocence in the writing, which is amazing, considering they wrote the book many years later. The two sisters create a wonderful atmosphere, and there are moments when you can almost smell the old mud of India and visualize the people surrounding them.
It is possible to visualize two young girls living in what is now Bangladesh and enjoying the Indian sun. They were not rich and wrote about their pecuniary constraints without affectation. The sisters compared life in India with life in England. When they sailed back to England, they could not (at first) accept England as home.
Most of us forget that, for many English people, India was home but not home.
A charming book, well worth reading if you want to get a glimpse of life in the Raj, through the eyes of young children.

One of Rumer Godden's midcentury kids' stories about dolls. In this case, there is a little orphan girl named Ivy, and a little doll dressed for Christmas (Holly). Ivy is meant to be spending Christmas at the Infants' home because everyone else at the orphanage has been farmed out for the holiday, but instead she decides she is going to her non-existent grandmother's house is Aylesbury. Ivy wants a Christmas doll. Holly has just been put out for sale in the toyshop on Christmas eve, and she wants a Christmas girl. Mrs. Jones, the policeman's childless wife, is wondering about maybe Christmas being different this year. Despite the nasty negging of the stuffed owl Abracadabra, and with the assistance of the toyshop boy Peter, and a whole bunch of coincidences... a Christmas miracle happens.
The best part of this book is the description of the various toys, including the small stuffed velvet hippos, Mallow and Wallow, and the comfortably saggy elephant Crumple.

Philippa is a middle-aged senior civil servant when she decides to give up her job and all her worldly goods and enter a convent. Philippa is the main character of this chronicle of life in a convent, but there are a dozen or so other major character, all nuns, who become living, breathing individuals who we come to know deeply over the course of this novel. I am not religious, but I found reading about the inner workings of a convent fascinating. In this convent, causal nuns do most of the day to day chores (cooking, cleaning) and the most exalted nuns (Dames) have specific roles they are assigned by the Abbess or head nun. And there are some very talented and highly regarded nuns in this convent. Dame Maura was a hugely respected music leader, and chants by the nuns were highly valued by music lovers. Dame Agnes was an esteemed scholar, writing and publishing scholarly works. Another nun published poetry. One nun wove exquisite silk on the convent's loom. And so on.

We follow these and many others over the years, some as newly entered novitiates, all the way through to the deaths of more than one. They grow and develop as the convent suffers a financial crisis and other woes, and the nuns try to overcome their petty rivalries and peeves, all narrated with a lot of good humor.

Highly recommended.

The Story of Holly and Ivy written in 1958 by Rumer Godden is a classic children’s Christmas story about the value of wishing. The story along with it’s lovely illustrations by Barbara Cooney gives one a warm glow as you read about the runaway orphan Ivy, who is wishing for a home and also for a doll to love, Policeman Jones and his wife, Mrs. Jones wish for a child to complete their family, while meanwhile Holly, the lovely Christmas doll on display in the toy shop wishes for a little girl to love.

With a little Christmas magic, wishes can come true.
