Okay. Listen. I understand that the "how?! and why?!" of it all of the basic plot-propellant of this novel—imaginary fanfic version of a character comes to life and the author of that fanfic has to deal with it; wackiness ensues—is secondary to the emotional growth of the characters and all. But we all agree this is an insane thing to happen in an otherwise normal world, right? And to just never address it! And never explain it!! And when all is said and done for all the characters to know about it to just massively shrug!!! I couldn't get past it, I'm sorry, it was just too weird for such an otherwise emotionally grounded book—if everything was like 40% wackier I could let it go, but the whole rest of the book was about like, wildly normal stuff and big, important feelings. Weird choices were made here!… (mer)

Perfect on Paper was a sheer delight. I stopped multiple times to take photos of pages that I really wanted to comment on, but I think the standout for me was the beautiful scene of the Q&Q meeting where everyone affirms Darcy's queerness. As a bisexual non-binary person I've had my fair share of 'am I queer enough?' moments because to the unknowing eye my marriage looks as allocishet as can be (well, depending on whether or not I'm wearing one of my multitude of bisexual non-binary t-shirts and pronoun badges!).

I really enjoyed the concept of Darcy as a secret agony aunt, even knowing that shit was most certainly going to hit the fan, and her wonderful narrative voice unfolding the story for the audience. I loved the whole ensemble of characters and how they all had their moments of growth along the way. And the spectrum of queer representation! Bloody delightful.

Finally, never have I ever read a book categorised as YA that uses the word 'fuck' so much and it delighted me to no end, especially because we got that immortal line 'I'm not here to fuck spiders' IN PRINT IN A BOOK. Aussie Aussie Aussie!

For an easy romance read, with some fun parallels to a classic story before developing into it's own

Thoughts:
This was being touted as an LGBTQ version of Grease, and while I love that story, I wanted to read this story, and worried it wouldn't develop it's own identity for leaning too heavily on being a recreation with a twist. Happily, that was not the case! There were enough similarities, mostly towards the beginning, that it was a fun parallel to unravel. As the story continued, it branched onto it's own path and away from being merely an imitation.

My biggest issue lies with some of the side characters who were quite undeveloped and felt somewhat pointless at times. If you're not paying attention, you might have no idea who Ryan and Hayley are, or why Ollie briefly considers calling them when he's distraught midway through the book. These 2 characters get 4 (MAYBE 5) mentions in the whole book, and for people who were his best friends his whole life, that felt pretty flimsy. Frankly, it made me think "Wow, Ollie sure is a crappy friend."

The romance was Eh for me, since it's dampened by Will's struggle to own his identity. He ends up being a jerk quite often, so it's hard to fall for him and see him through Ollie's eyes.

Overall, it was a good read and I definitely enjoyed it. Still, it was pretty middle of the pack, which could be changed by a little more development of some of the people around Ollie. There was definitely at least one moment where I was reading and told my boyfriend to shush before he started asking me something because I had to finish the scene - so definitely not bad! ☺

for a cute reality-show-esque love story, for vengeance satisfactory, for characters who make bad choices often but you can love them anyway

Thoughts:
People say it's not about the journey, but the destination. In the case of this book, the destination is also incredibly satisfying. What I'm saying is I really liked the ending. This story is based on vengeance, and vengeance comes up constantly as it's the main focus for one of the MCs (at least one!). That comes with all the drama required of sacrifices made to pursue vengeance and questioning what truly matters in life. In this case, I enjoyed the way each character came to their final decisions, and the "results" of it all in terms of the show.

Of course, the journey was also wonderful! I loved meeting each contestant and hearing about how they connected to the main in question. Seeing them connect with each other was way more satisfying, though. The premise of a dude's house full of ex-girlfriends is obviously going to spark some drama, and that was certainly here, but there was an impressive amount of measuredness and level-headed decisions as well. It prevented it from falling into areas that were too angry or vindictive to be able to enjoy it or root for anyone. By the end, I'm pretty sure I loved all of them (barring that douche).

The best word I can use for this book is satisfying. And I mean that in a way that evokes smug smiles, and perfectly silky chocolate cake, and the fading notes of your favorite song. It's just... everything is done right. It feels like exactly the story it needed to be, and it was genuinely just so fun to read.

Thank you to NetGalley for a free advanced copy. This is my honest review.
