Om författaren

Jane Goodall, 1934 - Jane Goodall, a well-respected English zoologist, is famous for her fieldwork with chimpanzees in Africa. An early interest in African wild animals and the opportunity, at age 18, to stay on a friend's farm in Kenya, led her to Dr. Louis Leakey; then curator of the National visa mer Museum of Natural History in Nairobi. Almost immediately Leakey hired Goodall as his assistant secretary, and she was soon accompanying Leakey and his wife on their expeditions. Following Leakey's suggestion that a field study of some of the higher primates would be a major contribution to the understanding of animal behavior, she began studying the chimpanzees of the Gombe Stream Research Center in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in 1960. Although she had no undergraduate degree, Goodall earned a Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1965, based on her first five years of research at the Gombe Center. After more than 20 years of extensive study and direct contact with wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat, Goodall continues to research, teach, and write about primate behavior today. (Bowker Author Biography) Jane Goodall's research at Gombe, Tanzania, is entering its fifth decade. Her books include "In the Shadow of Man", "Through a Window: My Thirty Years with the Chimpanzees of Gombe", & "Africa in My Blood: An Autobiography in Letters", edited by Dale Peterson. She resides in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. (Bowker Author Biography) visa färre

The only reason for 3 instead of 4 stars is the timing. Had I read this book when it was first published, I would have rated it higher. But having already read Michael Pollen and others, the information in this book isn't new anymore. That's a good thing. It means others have picked up the message and people are paying attention. Thanks Jane Goodall for starting the conversation!

This book is pretty awful. The story is of a young pangolin who is captured by poachers to be sold in a wet market and then saved by a young child. The illustrations are gorgeous and rich, the eyes big and soulful. The text is stilted and anthropomorphizes these animals strangely. ( I am pretty sure young pangolins do not need to be told by their parent to "go off and find a mate". When the pangolin is captured, the violence of the text and images turn a sweet book into a terrifying story of a child savior in the face of dangerous and violent poachers. That is pretty intense for a children's book. I do not think modern children need these kinds of heavy handed morals. This book would had more strength by focusing on the natural life of the pangolin and depending on children's innate empathy to do a better job than this scary, moralistic garbage.
Jane Goodall will continue to be one of my heroes and I will always keep her books for adults on my shelves. But not this.

Jane has been my hero and personal idol for as long as I can remember. Here she is again in all her positive glory, further inspiring the world to remain hopeful and to use your hope to act upon. Thank you, Jane, for the unending good you have made and continue to make on the world. And wonderful work, Doug! Thank you for bringing this series of conversations to the public for us all to learn from.

I was concerned this (read for our local book group) might be a bit heavy, but it's written in a light, conversational style, and I found it almost compulsive reading. There are anecdotes to explain or illustrate the principles and science, and plenty of brief pauses, as the authors stop for a break.

Jane Goodall is a naturalist, now in her late 80s but still writing and travelling, speaking for the animals, the trees, and humans in a world where climate change and devastation have led to a lot of people giving up on hope.

The book charts her reasons for hoping that the future might not be as bad as predicted, and I found it encouraging, inspiring and overall reassuring. Excellent writing which has, hopefully, brought some of the current environmental issues to the general public.
