This is a really excellent comparative study of the process by which doctrinal change happened in the United States Army during the Great War, in which the process by which the 1st, 2nd, 26th and 77th Divisions evolved away from the formal concept of "Open Warfare" (with its anachronistic emphasis on the elan of the rifleman) towards the systems based on fire-power and synchronization that tactical and operational success in 1914-18 was based upon. Much depended on the attitude of the commander presiding over the division in question, and the matter of just how much training time the units could cadge for themselves.… (mer)
