I thought this book had some great points even though I don't agree with everything in this book. When I picked it up in the gift shop at the creation museum in Kentucky, I was expecting something else, and I won't lie and say I wasn't disappointed. Even so it was an interesting read. I like that the author explained many different theories and not just the one he believed in. It did put somethings into a perspective I never thought of before and answered some questions I didn't even know I had.
Excerpts from his longer work of the same title. Well researched, well, researched at a deeper level than I would have done. Interesting details included about the varieties of language and of people groups/ethnicities and their origins based on the Biblical background in Genesis. I am sure that many people will find enough here to whet their appetites for more insights...and I feel that Hodge has shown that his opinions are based on solid logic, facts and good argumentation.
Written from a creationist perspective, this is written, too, for a wide lay audience. Hodge is trying to prove the validity of the Tower of Babel, the story of the Division of Tongues, and the Table of Nations in Genesis 10. He relies a lot on James Anderson's Royal Genealogies from 1732. He once quotes Hislop's The Two Babylons approvingly, though it is an appallingly shoddy piece of work. He relies on Ussher's dates. He unflinchingly thinks Babel must mean Babylon. (See David Rohl's works for a different, and I think better, interpretation.) Hodge spends several chapters trying to pin down where each of the men listed in the Table of Nations ended up. This can be illuminating, though there is a lot of guesswork based on similarities between patriarch names and tribal names. Australia (and Oceania) and America are addressed; Africa is too. He offers a chart for the Table of Nations with his guesswork and, most importantly, a chart of some similar division of tongues/tower building/people scattering legends from around the world. A decent work written for a wide lay and Bible-believing audience.… (mer)
