First sentence: "You're late," Madison Morris's great-aunt grumbled as Madison's mama helper her climb into the car. She said the same thing every Thursday. Madison and her mama were never late. Still, Madison knew better than to argue.

Premise/plot: Madison Morris started out the day super-positive and excited. Today is the day when all the students share their ideas on projects for how to change the world [activism]. But Great Aunt Joelle is a Negative Nelly, a true downer. Her negativity drowns out all the joy from Madison's day. She is now second-guessing all of her ideas--and she had so many. When she's called upon first by the teacher, she begs off saying that she'll share her ideas later... But actions have consequences in magical classrooms. And in this classroom, students can turn into animals. Madison Morris turns into a mouse....what will it take for her to become human again???

My thoughts: I like the series overall. I do. Series books can be so important for young readers. And this series offers entertainment and mild morals. There's a lesson packed into each book. The series will only improve once more titles are available. Binge-reading series is so much fun...for readers of all ages.

Good "PG" read for esp teen girls: Hallejuah (Hallie) has a serious crush on the most popular boy, Luke, a charming but duplicitous preacher's son, who acts one way w/adults and another with his cadre of teen friends. Coaxed to come to his room after hours on a youth group trip to Gatlinburg, TN, Hallie's idea of some innocent kissing turns into something much more, and when caught by Luke's roommates and youth group leaders, she is so ashamed and embarrassed, Luke's version of events is believed. She's the "slutty girl" who pushed herself on him; her mortified parents try to get her side of the story but Hallie is so shocked by Luke's lies and all her friends who believe him, she can't explain, nor even sing anymore- her great talent. After months of being grounded, her parents and youth gr leaders agree it would be good for her to come to a summer camp. Feeling alone and isolated, watching the entire youth group talk about her behind their hands, she struggles to accept that another new girl, Rachel, sincerely wants to be her friend. When the whole group goes on a hike in the mountains, Rachel has decided she's going back to the camp grounds and leave early; Hallie decides to go back w/her and Jonah, one of Hallie's childhood friends, notices their disappearance and decides to go after them. Taking the wrong fork of the trail leads them all astray, alone and without proper camping gear or enough food in the Smokey Mts. Truly lost, they spend days in the wilderness, trying to survive - and become bonded. Well written, while plot developments are believable, the narrative focuses a lot on Hallie's internal musings - so not for action/suspense readers, but certainly a genuine telling of one girl's overcoming the lies told about her, taking charge of her life, and learning to trust those who truly care about her. A much more rewarding boyfriend relationship develops with Jonah, too, so a positive payoff for those who stick w/the story.… (mer)

"How it Feels to Fly" was a worthwhile read dealing with some serious teenage issues. Sam was an interesting character struggling with body image and anxiety, both of which were portrayed realistically. She hated herself for her failings and her inner voice constantly dragged her down. In this way the book reminded me of "Skinny" by Donna Cooner.

Overall, I liked all the characters at Perform at Your Peak camp, each one with their own strengths, but all struggling their inner demons and anxiety. Zoe, who started out as a bit of a pain in the neck, became one of my favourite characters with her quirky, no-nonsense attitude, and I loved how the group's dynamics changed from a bunch of strangers to a supportive, little family.

The only thing that spoilt the book for me was the 'romance'. It never felt right and I thought it was unnecessary. In fact, the only times I felt frustrated with Sam were when she was around (or dreaming of) Andrew.

Many teenagers will identify with one or more of the characters in this book. Even though the author hasn't attempted to offer all the answers or provide a quick-fix remedy for Sam's issues, she did finish "How it Feels to Fly" on a positive note showing the importance of living, and enjoying, the now rather than fixating on the past or future.
