If I could give this book a 3.75 that would be an appropriate rating, as due to the subject's natural reticence there are many questions one has about Krueger that Holzimmer can't offer even educated speculation on, particularly in regards to the Krueger's early years. The biggest source of wonder for me is how does the natural son of a military officer and the stepson of a minister of intellectual bent find himself at what was essentially a vocational school for tradesmen? Was this merely a commentary on the limited economic options of Krueger's family, or did his mother want to keep her son close to home due to other issues; we simply don't know.

The real meat of this book is Holzimmer's outline of Krueger's growth as an officer, culminating in how the general became one of the fathers of modern operational art in the United States Army. The point being is that the great Louisiana Maneuvers that demonstrated Krueger's capacity for flag-grade command were not simply a case of Krueger being carried by the Army's rising generation of field-grade officers; Krueger had too much drive and aggression for that. That demonstrated aggression is probably what allowed Krueger to stand up to MacArthur more often than not and to temper plans that were driven more by the desperate drive to reach the Philippines before the U.S. Navy's Central Pacific operations rendered an early recapture of the Philippines irrelevant.

As for why Krueger is left with a diminished reputation of being a merely a "soldier's general," rather than a consummate professional, part of this is due to the man's desire to spend no more time in the spotlight than necessary, but also due to Robert Eichelberger's bitter and public grudge against MacArthur and the rest of his colleagues in high command in the Southwest Pacific.
