William H. Honan (1930–2014)

William Holmes Honan was born in Manhattan, New York on May 11, 1930. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Oberlin College in 1952 and a master's degree in drama from the University of Virginia in 1955. Before working at The New York Times, he was an associate editor at Newsweek, an visa mer assistant editor at The New Yorker, and the editor of The Villager. He started working for The Times in 1969 and retired in 2000. He was the editor of the Arts and Leisure section of the newspaper from 1974 to 1982. He also wrote several books including Visions of Infamy: The Untold Story of How Journalist Hector C. Bywater Devised the Plans That Led to Pearl Harbor and Treasure Hunt: A New York Times Reporter Tracks the Quedlinburg Hoard. He died from cardiac arrest on April 28, 2014 at the age of 83.
