One star for perseverance and self-publishing, although I should take even that away for the word "bestselling" on the cover. Bestselling of the author's works, perhaps, but not on any conventional lists, so it's misleading at best to put that on the cover, and I know for a fact that at least a couple of coworkers honestly believed that this book had won some award or made some "best current fiction" list.
What can I say? The book was terrible! I come from the author's neck of the woods, and I can 100% guarantee that people are NOT like his characters. He took the worst and silliest of the stereotypes and tried to flesh them into characters. The grammar is atrocious, the writing style is bipolar, and the book in general is so over-the-top bad, it's actually pretty funny. Maybe I should add an extra star for humour factor, because I read excerpts aloud to my husband while on a road trip and we couldn't stop laughing.… (mer)
Similar to his first book (Minnow Trap), but much harder to make it all the way through. Perhaps his writing has moved from so bad it is funny to just bad.
