Sal has issues - boy, does he have issues. HIV+, incest survivor, drama queen, boy-looking-for-Daddy, with it all he's very introspective and thoughtful. He knows his relationship with DaddyPete is dysfunctional, tries to work it out, but has the sense to end it when that won't happen. Only to go on to someone who turns out to be just as bad for him, in a different way. But he can see what he's doing and why, and tries to change it.
It's not just about sex, though. He understands the value of friendship, and has a deeply caring relationship with Max, the young daughter of a lesbian friend, and is devastated when mom and daughter move to the East Coast.
