You might not think that an interesting story could be teased out of the career of such a prosaic aircraft as a ship-borne reconnaissance machine, but it turns out that there's a meaty story associated with the Ar 196. To a large degree this is something of a history of the German navy in World War II, as this plane was equipment on almost all the significant sorties of German warships, including the armed merchant cruisers used as anti-shipping raiders.

One has here a solid addition to the series, with the bulk of the work being devoted to either Dutch service in the Far East, or the German use of the machine in its air-sea rescue squadrons. If you're interested in this aircraft you won't regret making the purchase.
