There were parts of this story that I enjoyed, like Trisha learning Muay Thai, although she seems to let herself get beat down a lot and you are left wondering if it is so she can feel something. I like that Trisha's Muay Thai friends care enough about her health to try and get her to stop fighting for a little while.

I didn't really care for the ending, Trisha basically switches her entire point of view and becomes complacent to all of the things she hated throughout the book.

(mer)

Mystery suspense thriller that sets the stage for an upcoming series about a woman, Nora Watts, who suffers from past traumas, working for an investigative agency. Nora is an assistant to the two owners but serves the role of investigator in the storyline. The plot revolves around the search for a missing teenage girl with personal connections to Nora.

Nora spends a good deal of time informing the reader of her background and experiences. It’s almost as if she is talking directly to the reader. I thought it was an entertaining, easy-to-read story that suffers from several of the usual difficulties with mystery-thrillers. There are a couple of large holes in the plot, key breaks in the case conveniently provided, and a series of extremely unlikely events. It requires a massive suspension of disbelief. It reminded me of one of those “detective shows” on television, where the mystery is explained and wrapped up in a half hour time slot. On the plus side, the author touches on several environmental and immigration issues in Canada (with parallels in the U.S.), and has attempted to give her protagonist an unusual voice, which I thought it was somewhat effective in transcending the usual tropes of this genre.

Contains sex and violence, including rape. If you don’t mind unlikeable characters and enjoy thrillers, you may like this book.

Eyes Like Mine starts off with Nora Watts learning that her daughter Bonnie that she gave birth to 15 years ago, but didn't keep has gone missing. Has Bonnie run away, or have she been kidnapped? For Nora is Bonnie just an awful reminder of something traumatic that happened to her years ago, but still, she can't help, but try to find out the truth about what happened to Bonnie.

Eyes Like Mine is a bleak thriller about a woman that has been through so much since she was a child that it's amazing that she has the strength to keep going. Her mother left her and her younger sister and her father killed himself when they were very young and they ended up in foster care. Then, years later she ends up pregnant with a child she doesn't want. And, now she has to face the past and through the book, we learn the truth about what happened to her that made her give up her daughter.

It's not hard to feel sorry for Nora Watts, she has been through so much and not with not much support through her life. Her sister is a real bitch. She does, however, have the greatest bosses, a gay couple and she also has a dog that, despite Nora's pessimistic nature seems to like her more than Nora thinks. She also has a strained relationship with her ex-sponsor.

The book is engaging to read, you get pulled into the story and it doesn't let you go. I did, however, feel that I wanted to know more when the story ended, not that the ending was bad, just that I wanted to know what would happen next.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review!
