The manuscript of the cartulary of Mont-Saint-Michel (Bibliotheque municipale d'Avranches, 210) is well known on account of its beautiful illustrations, as well as for the importance of several charters of the early dukes of Normandy. Now for the first time, however, the text of the original cartulary is edited in full, together with appendices of related texts which were not included in the cartulary. A detailed introduction, based on both the cartulary and a number of other Mont texts, shows how the monks rewrote the history of their abbey in the eleventh century, in a version unquestioningly followed by historians ever since. The text was received from the author and given its first proof shortly before the issue of this catalogue, and publication is expected in late 2004.… (mer)
