My daughter was diagnosed with leukemia in June of 2007. This book was given to me in the hospital, shortly after her diagnosis. It took a few months for the initial shock of diagnosis to wear off, before I felt able to read and process the information in this book. But once I started reading it, the book became a great reference for me. The section on the different medications, their uses and side effects was especially helpful and I referred to it many times.

I enjoyed reading what other parents and children had to say about this disease. Their thoughts were interspersed throughout the book and I always found them informative. As I began looking for other books on the subject, I realized that this is the best and most complete reference book out there for childhood leukemia. Nancy Keene has done a great job in gathering together information and presenting it in a readable and understandable way. Four years later, my daughter is still in treatment, and I still refer to this book. I have recently purchased Ms. Keene's book [b:Childhood Cancer Survivors: A Practical Guide to Your Future|303064|Childhood Cancer Survivors A Practical Guide to Your Future (Childhood Cancer Guides)|Nancy Keene|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1173555016s/303064.jpg|294120] to help us navigate the years ahead.… (mer)

My daughter has been battling leukemia for the last 4 years, so I have been reading this book to get a better idea of what might face her in the future. This is not a book that you sit down and read in one sitting. It is more a reference book. Throughout the book, there are quotes from cancer survivors and their parents. I enjoy reading about their experiences in their own words.

Your Child in the Hospital: A Practical Guide for Parents by Nancy Keene and Rachel Prentice. Epiphany library section 8 L: Life Skills, Special Needs. This book helps parents prepare their children for a trip to the hospital, whether it is for outpatient surgery or an extended stay. It covers essential information such as preparing your child, what to take along (include your child’s blankie or favorite stuffed toy), forging alliances with your child’s doctor and the hospital staff, making use of all the hospital’s staff and facilities, awareness of common hospital procedures such as taking blood or x-rays, preparing for surgery, pain management, the effect of a hospital stay on feelings, behavior and the family, and the basics about hospital records, billing, insurance, and financing. There is even a chapter on what friends and family should say to children facing procedures and what NOT to say. That’s very helpful so you don’t sound like un unfeeling clod!
I always remember Mr. Rogers telling parents to prepare their children before a hospital visit – tell the child in an age-appropriate way what the child will experience and why, and to help the child understand that cooperation is essential to a good result and quicker release from the hospital. What they don’t know and are afraid to ask about is a lot more scary than being armed with a little bit of useful information and hope. Above all, help your child understand that the reason they are there is to get better, and that you will be with them every step of the way. They can even take their favorite stuffed toy into surgery! This is a very helpful book and a great addition to our many parenting books.
