Surprisingly amusing account of marriage Gerald is a fuss-pot, a fogey, and a darling of the eco-movement. Mary is the opposite: worker, the socialite and the diplomat. They live in a thatched cottage in Wiltshire as empty nesters. She’s a journalist and he’s an artist but neither share the edgy, modernist outlook their occupations imply. If you want an insight into the English rural middle class, this could be for you.

The bonus was seeing Mary and her husband Giles and their views on popular TV programmes. Now they have written a joint diary which I have listened to as an audio book read by them both. It is a wonderful portrait of a marriage, with the two of them both in cahoots and at daggers drawn! Giles is so lucky he is not married to me as I would have strangled him years ago! Mary is charming and long suffering. Giles is a domestic agent provocateur. I have laughed so much when listening to it, but have also taken some valuable advice about marriage from it. A series of articles about living with a husband when both parties work from home. It's wry and humourous and you have to sometimes wonder how she managed not to kill him. Anyone in a long term relationship would recognise most of the stories.
