Who wouldn't want to read a memoir of an emotional wreck alcoholic who works as an advertising executive at day, but loved transforming himself into a blonde drag queen by night?

Okay.
A lot of people wouldn't.
But, still.

I seriously did not expect to get sucked into this book since I had no idea who the author is, or what he did. Sometimes it got hilarious, but if Kilmer-Purcell had been the type to pity himself and his life, I would have found it to be really awfully sad. I now know all I need to know about drag queens and the night life of escorts in New York from this book, and though I felt uninterested in that at times, it was definitely enjoyable reading about it and constantly exclaiming: "THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS?!"

So if you like the description, go ahead and read it. I didn't, and I'm glad I did. It was a nice change in my usual style of books.

I'm a sucker for any of these "urbanites fall in love with a country farm and have zany adventures" stories and this one certainly fits the bill. I liked it a lot, very similar to "Hit by a Farm" including the fact that both stories feature 2 homosexuals from the city going to the country. But both stories also delve into the issues their relationships encounter while trying to make this big change from city to country life. Along the way, there's plenty to laugh about. Wanna-be-farmers will enjoy the story.… (mer)

I'm not a very frequent reader of memoirs, preferring fiction or full autobiographies, but this was pretty good. Josh Kilmer-Purcell had an exciting, albeit dangerous, life in NYC. It was really fun to read. However, it was a slow read and I found myself dragging through it in order to get to my next book, refusing to put it to the side without finishing. His writing style isn't the most alluring and I found myself wanting less time spent on his relationship and more stories of his time in drag. If you are a fan of memoirs, I would definitely recommend it. It wasn't one of my favorites, but I do love the mental image of Kilmer-Purcell's goldfish tits.… (mer)

nonfiction; memoir (advertising exec and his partner buy historic mansion and become part-time farmers/bloggers/soap-sellers = not all happy goat times, but a thoughtful reflection on life and self). I really liked the goat parts, and liked the comforting friendships found in the small town community.
