I liked this one much better than the first. I do think that it could benefit from adding more of the villain and expanding the military/government stuff.

First of all, big ol’ trigger warning that this book includes a pretty graphic rape scene.

Man, I really, really wanted to like this more. There was an absurd amount of angst potential but I feel like it kinda went unfulfilled. I mean, this will go on the angst shelf just because of the betrayal, but I didn't really feel that there was the groveling that Jacqueline deserved. So many things to like, but several quibbles:

1. For someone who was violently physically assaulted and raped - like a week previous, no less - Jacqueline sure seems to have suffered no emotional repercussions. There is one reference to a slight pause while kissing her new husband that he interprets as some potential wariness due to her experience, but really she is sexually eager for him from the start and just jumps right into the sack. Would that we could all immediately get over horrific trauma like Jacqueline does.

2. Apparently sex workers have power because they “have the thing men want, and make them pay”? Err, that’s not really how capitalism works. I sell my labor because I need the money; I don’t have power over my boss (at least not on my own, that’s what unions are for). If his mother was independently wealthy and was a courtesan as a hobby or something, you might be able to make an argument, but even still, in a patriarchal society, women don't hold power over men due to their gender.

3. If Henry initially refused to marry Jacqueline because her father said she might be with child, why would he be willing to marry her later, after finding out the truth about what happened? Sure, she may not have been with child when her father lied to Henry, but she’s been married for at least a month or two, there definitely a chance she is pregnant when he offers to have her marriage annulled and to marry her...?

4. “I will never let you have her,” Devil sneered. “I would kill her myself before I let you touch her again.” Er, how... romantic?

5. Lord Edwards DID NOT deserve his daughter's easy forgiveness! Like with Devil, Jacqueline really should have stood her ground IMO. I am not saying never forgive her father, I understand that he was hurting, but that is not an excuse to abuse your daughter!

6. Why was there the Marcus/Phillip storyline? My only guess is because the author was setting up a later book that never happened, because otherwise it was random and irrelevant to the plot.

7. Jacqueline wants to name their daughter after Devil’s mother because “Yours was a happy childhood, and your mother loved you.” Wait, what? Didn’t he live in a brothel and then on the streets after his mother died?
