A young woman’s coming of age in early 20th century Egypt. The publisher says “simple, unpretentious prose.” I’d say “perfectly serviceable, nothing special.” Read this book for its fascinating glimpse into Egyptian life at that time with an emphasis on customs, beliefs, and mores. If the subject isn’t of interest, you won’t miss much.

LOVE LOVE LOVE !
I am into all things Egyptian, including my study of the language with 2 tutors, their lovely silver jewelry, comfy gallabayyas, and feminist literature. This book was written by an author who has gone out of fashion and is not read much now. She was from the upper middle class and as such wrote and spoke French as well if not better than Arabic.
There are not many to be had translated into English, but there are a few remaining ones ( I bought the 3 that were translated to English ) if you are fluent in French, as they have not been translated.
She fled Egypt when Nasser came into power and he confiscated most of her property and goods. There is even controversy over where she died and where her final resting place is.
The 3 stories are fairly short and all deal with women, love and tragedy of one sort or another.
