Thirty-six 5-star reviews! And well-deserved.

Let’s talk about what this book is. It’s a coming of age story about Timber Marlow, a young refugee from a cannibal compound who innocently faces a whole new world while the danger of escaping her sheltered life with more than a few bodies behind her lurks in the shadows.

The Divinity could have been any kind of compound and the story would be more or less the same. Don’t let the cannibalism throw you. The Divinity was well-detailed, though rarely gruesome and as Timber accepts her cannibal lifestyle as “normal”, so did I as the reader. The author does a great job of showing the closeness and innocence of Timber’s friendships, her natural curiosity, and her innate intellect which makes her so very real. There is something about her you can’t help but love and root for. Knowing a villain was waiting for his revenge, I had to keep turning the pages to see if she was safe.

I can tell you that I haven’t had a book call me back as much as Inside the Outside in some time. The characters are unconventional, flawed, and as real as the world Martin’s made for them. You’ll laugh, cry, and feel outraged, all the while rooting for Timber’s happy ending. I can’t tell you whether or not she gets it. That you’ll have to read to find out. A gripping, page-turning awesome tale that I couldn’t get enough of.

This is a book very unlike anything else I've ever read.

The protagonist, Timber Marlowe, was born and raised in a cult called "The Divinity of Feminine Reproach". She knows no other life.
The rules of the cult are many and breaking the rules is not allowed. The punishment for breaking them? You will be sent to the Sustenance House where your body will be prepared as food for the rest of the cult. This story follows Timber as she tries to escape.

The first section of the book is mostly involved in filling in information about the Divinity. It's detailed but engaging. The second and third sections delve more deeply into Timber's life and her escape from the Divinity.

Timber is not your every day protagonist. She has done some terrible, terrible things. The trick of this book is that you care about her anyway. All of the characters in the book are well drawn and defined. I cared about all of them, both good and bad.

Two last things. First: this book is defintely not for the squeamish or those with weak stomachs. Second: This book was incredibly well edited and well written. I spotted only two typos and I can't even remember the last time I saw a book with that few errors.
I would highly recommend this to any horror fan, even though it is not really a scary story in the traditional sense.

As the first in Martin’s Trilogy, The Vampire, the Hunter and the Girl follows Olivia, Jesus and Adam as they develop their relationships and occasionally work against each other. We learn a lot about how Vampires live and stay hidden in our society, but sadly that may be the best thing I can say.

All three main characters are developed fairly well, making it easy for me to understand their actions and emotions, but I felt the constant and repetitive flash backs annoying, I found myself skipping through pages often, which is NOT how a fictional book should be. Not to mention the unnecessary back story of the minor characters, Darlene for one.

The plot is interesting, a little slow for my liking, but it does include some exciting and often a little scary elements. The romance between Olivia and Mike, and later Jesus’s jealousy.

If you like a paranormal story then you might like this. Enjoy.

The Vampire, the Hunter and the Girl by Marti Lastrapes is Book I of a trilogy. The title tells us there will be a triangle, but this triangle will include some unusual characters in unusual situations. I see some serious problems ahead for all of them.

They were brought before Dracula. Why? Let’s read on and find out.

Adam is a vampire and his biggest problem is boredom, so he takes up a hobby, bowling. Cherry, a vampire, had found him there and after she changed him they became inseparable. When Cherry disappears he notices Olivia.

Jesus is the Mexican vampire hunter. His mother had been killed by a vampire, so he became a latch key kid at a very young age. The WWF and wrestling were his babysitters. He had wrestled in school but mixed martial arts was what he wanted do. He’d only had one friend, Daniel and they had a plan. Jesus would be the fighter and Daniel the trainer until…

Now, Jesus walks the dark side and uses himself as bait to lure vampires in for the kill.

Olivia works at the bowling alley and is a huge wrestling fan. She is writing a book about vampires. Her memories draw her to Heritage Park. She loves looking out at Rancho Cucamonga, feeling the dewy grass beneath her feet and the air flowing around her body as she swings to and fro, until…

Adam and Olivia become friends of a sort. She lets him feed and he gives her information for her vampire novel. How dysfunctional is that?

Jesus and Olivia meet at the gym where he works and trains, the Ground and Pound. She was there to learn self defense.

Olivia’s friend Elowyn strips at Tropical Lei where Olivia also bartends. Johnson is Jesus’s friend at Ground and Pound . The scene where Elowyn and Johnson are on a date and Victus, a vicious vampire, sees them is great. The vampire TV shows and movies I have seen help me to visualize the action and I love it.

Elowyn and Olivia’s ideas of life seem very naive, but had a ring of truth to them. It adds a bit of reality into their fantasies and expectations and shows how different life really is – life lessons.

The Barbershop, vampires went there for a cut and dinner. A gruesome scenario, where humans are chained to the wall, half dead to almost dead to barely alive. Would a vamp care if they were filthy and stank of day old sweat and fear?

A girl, a boy, a vampire – not your normal triangle. The story being told from different character views, was good and bad. At times, the story seemed to jumped around a lot with the repetition slowing down the pacing, but I did like the different characters descriptions of the same event. This is an ARC, so I think this can easily be improved upon before the finished product is released.

I found some originality in the storyline. Martin Latrapes development of the characters brought them to life on the pages. I really wanted them to end up friends, but something tells me that cannot happen. What do you think?

Why did Dracula haul them in? The ending explained many of my questions and raised many more. I enjoyed and would recommend The Vampire, The Hunter, The Girl by Martin Latrapes. I will be following the author to find out what happens in Book II, The Vampire, The Hunter and The Witch.

I received an ARC in return for an honest and unbiased review.
