This film examines the methods and tragic long-term consequences of attempts to civilize Native Americans in the U.S. during the late 1800s. Guided by the motto, "kill the Indian, and save the Man," Captain Richard Pratt established the Carlisle School to teach Indians to read and write English, putting them in uniforms and drilling them like soldiers. Native Americans who attended the school, which continued into the 1930s tell this story of cultural genocide- conducted in the name of humanism- and its consequences for a generation of American Indians.… (mer)
