Billie Letts was born Billie Dean Gipson in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 30, 1938. She received a bachelor's degree in English and education from Southeast Missouri State University and a master's in behavioral studies from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She taught English in grade school before visa mer moving to the college level. Her last position was at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Her first novel, Where the Heart Is, was published in 1995. It received the 1996 Oklahoma Books Award, the Walker Percy Award, and was an Oprah Book Club selection. It was adapted into a movie starring Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd in 2000. Her other works included Shoot the Moon and The Honk and Holler Opening Soon. this might wrap things up on an overly high note for most of the characters, but maybe sometimes that's what is best for the story. i really enjoyed this and thought the writing was great, the characters were relatable, the story matters. the end was a little too much but up until then i thought it was great. i fell into this immediately and only really started to come out of it near the end when it maybe started to be a little much for me. but i so enjoyed being in this town with these people, in this cafe.

a really representative example of the writing i loved: "Molly O hadn't missed a day of work at the Honk since she'd found her fourteen-year-old daughter naked in the backseat of a car with a drummer in a band called Hard Drivin'."

Read this book when it was first published and loved it. One of those books that remain with you for life.
