Kort biografi
Liu Cixin, born in June 1963, is a representative of the new generation of Chinese science fiction authors and recognized as a leading voice in Chinese science fiction. He was awarded the China Galaxy Science Fiction Award for eight consecutive years, from 1999 to 2006 and again in 2010. His representative work The Three-body Problem is the BEST STORY of 2015 Hugo Awards, the 3rd of 2015 Campbell Award finalists, and nominee of 2015 Nebulas Award.

His works have received wide acclaim on account of their powerful atmosphere and brilliant imagination. Liu Cixin's stories successfully combine the exceedingly ephemeral with hard reality, all the while focussing on revealing the essence and aesthetics of science. He has endeavoured to create a distinctly Chinese style of science fiction. Liu Cixin is a member of the China Writers' Association and the Shanxi Writers' Association.

Jeff's 2019 Reads i The Green Dragon (april 2021)

Most of the time I was all "this is totally preposterous" but then I'd be "hold on, perhaps there's more to... nah, it's ludicrous". The "science" is ridiculous, and the writing just isn't good (which I don't think is on the translator). One thing that really grated was being told how rich and sophisticated the game — which is a major plot device — is, rather showing it. I'm all for a willing suspension of disbelief, but so little made sense that you just had to suspend all critical thinking about the plot, the science or the world described. That said, there were flashes of interest, and I was sorta intrigued about what was going to happen, which just about garnered it an extra star. I suppose I should give it 3*s as a reference for anyone who has read the book, but I can't bring myself, even for the sake of a visual pun.… (mer)

The background-filling flashbacks lacked tension as did the sometimes omniscient POV and narrative summary. All together they slowed the pacing. However, the solid characterizations of the main characters, the three body game, the hard science, and the comic mythic-style narration of Trisolarian scientific advancements in quantum applications stitched together an entertaining and thought-provoking read.

A solid ending for the first volume.

Full Video Review

The Three Body Problem does an excellent job of making the characters feel like average people caught up in terrifying circumstances and it works. Scientists, government officials and characters feel grounded and genuine and a reckless plainclothes police detective named Shi Qiang (She Chiang) brings a lot of energy and humour into the mix. While we see the story through the eyes of a few people the story is more holistically about the state of the human race.

There are some aspects of Chinese culture and references that might take a bit of research to understand. In interviews Ken Liu has stated this is deliberate as he didn’t want to dilute the Chinese mode of storytelling for the familiar convenience of an English one. I’ve got to send my praise, Ken Liu has done a great job of the translation. It doesn’t read like some basic translations I’ve read in the past and you can tell a lot of love went into this. After an experience as challenging as The Three Body Problem, I’m very eagerly anticipating his next original fantasy novel The Grace of Kings.

Be aware that this is a very smart book. Later chapters cover some very confusing math and what I’ve been told is quantum entanglement. There will be a point when some really bizarre stuff happens and you just have to go with it. If somehow you can comprehend those items, you probably have tenure in the physics department of a prestigious university.

I'll go ahead and predict that this will likely be on the shortlist of Hugo award nominations for this year. From what I understand it would be eligible.
