ABSTRACT:
The drying of lumber is a widespread industry in the United States, consuming over 10 14 Btu/year of thermal energy. For several reasons (principally the economics of shipping heavy wet wood versus lighter dry wood) the drying is normally performed near or at the saw mills which are themselves generally near the harvest sites. As a result, the lumber drying industry is represented, in one form or another, in almost every section of the country. Too, the basic operations and thermal processes that go into removing water from wood are the same for all types of wood (the principal differences being only the dry bulb and wet bulb temperature schedules that vary from one species to the next).

The Department of Energy's experiment in solar industrial process heat for drying lumber at the LaCour Kiln Service in Canton, Mississippi, should prove very valuable in stimulating the use of solar energy in this widespread industrial process. The intent of this program was to gather data on system performance, operating characteristics, and economic parameters to allow rational decisions to be made concerning the value of solar energy in kiln drying of lumber. It is the intent of this report to present these data, as best they could be determined during this program.
