There is absolutely no reason not to let your hair dry on its own. It's ridiculous to use electricity to dry your hair if you don't have a good reason and want to do so. I'm 48 and I have wonderful hair because I never abuse it with a hair dryer or styling products. That being said, if not drying one's hair did lead to tropical plants growing from it, would that really be so bad?

I was working on a stumper for a patron about dirty kids and this book came up. I think part of the reason I had issue with it is because I also hate to dry my hair and will go to work with it damp. In this book, Ruthie grows plants out of her hair because she goes to bed with it wet.

Little Kid Reaction: The book is written for young readers with dreams. The book identifies some very valuable lessons about our dreams to become what we see on television, as well as what happens when you let attention change your view of life, family, and friends. This is a very exciting book that is funny, witty, and serious. It will keep the reader interested at all times. I would highly recommend this book to the young reader in pre-teens as a funny, serious, adventurous, and educational. The book has a good plot, life lesson, and great ending.

Big Kid Reaction: Great story, well told! Parents and kids alike will relate to the desire for fame and the pervasiveness (if not fixation on) reality television. The family dynamics are universal, even though the specific events may not be.

Pros: This is a wholesome read that kids and parents will enjoy. This also has great potential as a high interest / low readability book.

Jermaine Davidson, eleven years old, is like so many kids today who want to be superstars. What originally starts out as a "reality show" turns into chaos. It seems that Jermaine thinks her family is boring. It is this thought process that leads her to stage many scenes for her "show". These are the beginnings of catastrophes. Jermaine is typical of many middle schoolers who think only of themselves. I say this as a middle school teacher. They don't always think things through first. This is a great, or off limits. I heard the voices of many of my students in my head commenting, "if that was my sister she'd be in so much trouble." This is an extremely believable and humorous book. I loved the decision Jermaine finally makes. What? You don't know what I'm talking about? Then you really must read the book. I can't wait to do a book talk and recommend it to my students and our media specialist.… (mer)
