It is simple to read in both style and length (190 pages). Lucas has his own views, but is fair to the spectrum. He is neither a literalist nor a sceptic. Instead, with a broad understanding of the scientific endeavour and its findings, he is able to say in a nicely measured way what the person reading Genesis can learn from the insights of science (and what they can't). I have no hesitation in recommending this to my church: it is not foolishly simplistic, it is humble about the conditional nature of both scientific and biblical interpretations (even ones he favours), it is more interested in how science and the Bible work together than fueling antagonism, it is well written, it contains a short list of sensible references at the end of each chapter, and it is keenly interested in the meaning of Genesis.
Originally written for SU, it was then reworked a decade later for this IVP edition. While it is a pity they didn't do better with the typsetting for the new edition, it has kept the price down, and that makes it even more accessible.… (mer)
