Here's the story of a lovely vixen
Who was bringing up one very lovely kit.
Yes that girl had hair of red, like her mother,
The dad's been gone a bit.

Here's the story, of a boar named Edmund,
Who was busy with three boys of his own,
They were badgers, living all together,
Yet they were all alone.

Till the one day when the vixen met this badger
And they knew it was much more than a hunch,
That this group must somehow form a family.
That's the way we all became Fox-Badger Bunch.

Fox-Badger Bunch,
Fox-Badger Bunch,
That's the way we became Fox-Badger Bunch.

So yes, it's nice to see a children's comic about a blended family as a divorced fox pairs up with a widower badger in the forest, but its a bit dull for an older reader. This first outing mostly focuses on the kids clashing until they are united by a desire to split up their parents. But, you know, plans go awry.

Apparently this is popular in its home country of France, where it has inspired two spin-off book series featuring the kids and a 96-episode animated show under the title, "La famille Blaireau Renard." I hope their theme song writer had the same idea I did . . .

This is the first book I have read in the graphic novel series and I liked it. I tried to read it with my 5 year old grandson, but he had trouble following the text with the pictures and kept asking where I was. It will be better with children who are beginning to read independently (age 7 to 9). The story is cute and has a good message. When Ginger, the fox, is told by The Wild Cat that her father would be ashamed of her, she begins to worry and leaves her territory to find more foxes. Of course, she realizes that her parents are proud of her no matter what and that it is important to be herself. The way the story is laid out is wonderful and the illustrations are beautiful, vibrant and the animals are cute. A good addition to a class or school library. The publisher, Lerner Publishing Group - Graphic Universe, generously provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions shared are my own.… (mer)

I think this is the most Depressing Mr Badger and Mrs. Fox book in the series. A great entertainer is coming for a show. But the entertainer makes fun of little fox. So little fox runs away and questions who she is. Does her dad love her? Is she really a fox? The little badgers try to exact revenge on the Wild Cat, but that goes awry. The story has a good message, but its not the fun romp that can be found in the rest of the series.
