Uma explicação cabal para tão invulgar e luxuoso projecto reside na riqueza mineira da região e na tomada do poder na cidade por uma burguesia que tomou nas suas mãos a gestão desses recursos. Importa também sublinhar a importância das comunidades orientais nas cidades do sul. A epigrafia tem dado, a esse propósito, um contributo inestimável, permitindo nos estabelecer ligações entre Mértola e grupos de mercadores que usavam o grego como língua de comunicação. As relações de Mértola com o mundo bizantino terão sido incrementadas por esses contactos e contribuíram para incluir a cidade no circuito de produção artística daquele tempo. O caminho de Oriente para Ocidente percorrido pelos mosaístas que trabalharam no complexo religioso da área palatina não teria sido possível sem esse ambiente de contactos e de relações. Sobretudo, nada teria sido possível sem o impulso do comércio e sem o papel decisivo que os mercadores tiveram.

A full explanation for such an unusual and luxurious project lies in the mining wealth of the region and the seizure of power in the city by a bourgeoisie that took upon itself the management of these resources. It should also be stressed the importance of eastern communities in southern cities. In this regard, the epigraphy has given us an invaluable contribution, allowing us to establish links between Mértola and groups of merchants who used Greek a as language of communication. The relations between Mértola and the Byzantine world would have increased by these contacts and contributed to include the city in the circuit of artistic production of the time. The path travelled from East to West by the mosaic artisans who worked in the religious complex of the palatial area would not have been possible without such an environment of contacts and relationships. O livro Mesquita: Igreja de Mértola, agora com uma edição, revista e aumentada, apresenta novas fotografias, desenhos e conteúdos científicos. Os restos arquitetónicos recuperados, ao longo dos últimos anos ou conservados no próprio edifício, mostram a importância dos espaços sagrados que se sucederam neste lugar. A evolução do templo islâmico para igreja terá sido lenta, tendo tido, segundo os autores, um maior impacto ao nível da organização do espaço do que propriamente ao nível estrutural. Esta edição vem colocar novamente em destaque a importância destes achados arquitetónicos e a sua monumentalidade.

The book entitled “Mesquita: Igreja de Mértola”, now in a revised and augmented edition, presents new photos, drawings and scientific content. The architectural remains recovered over the last few years, or preserved in the building itself, show the importance of the sacred spaces that succeeded in this place. The evolution from Islamic temple to Christian church would have been slow and, according to the authors, had a deeper impact in terms of spatial organisation rather than at a structural level. This new edition highlights again the importance of these architectural findings and its monumentality.… (mer)
