Beverley Manley

The memoirs of Beverly Manley (née Anderson) once wife of Michael Manley who was prime minister of Jamaica in the 1970s and the in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This tells the tale of her childhood and youth, how she met Manley, her marriage and relationship, the turbulent period of the1970s, how the marriage ended, her subsequent career and life, the end of Manley's life, and so on. It's an occasionally engaging story that catches fire in a number of places, but also glides over some important details. It's the first memoir I've ever read where so many of the people mentioned are ones I know, some of whom I went to school and university with, or worked with. The book provides an excellent view of recent Jamaican history from the perspective of someone who had a ringside seat.… (mer)
