Simple, solid, popular level history, and for me a keeper of a book, because this book while good on first read, for me gets better with rereads accompanied by growth in general history knowledge relevant to but not the focus of the book (war, China, Russia, India, crusades, Turks). Simple enough for someone new to the topic, but with enough substance to merit keeping and rereading. Also nice is that it did offer some broader context quick mentions without going down the rabbit hole (for ex, other Mongol branches, such as Babur and Mughals of India) -- I appreciate this both to connect stuff together and also to plan future study. (Sometimes I don't want to look up a bunch of notes, but I still crave a history fix, this book supplied it and pleasantly.)… (mer)
