ETA: I just noticed I reviewed this back in May and posted it on my Sterek Fanfic Freaks Reading Log:

Steter isn't my go-to pairing when it comes to TW fanfics (Sterek is my favorite) but when I find a good one, it is really good.

This one is Steter/Fix-It/Time-Travel/Magic and God, the FEELS, at a little under 16,000 words, it had everything I love.

And the Sheriff, at the end, *wipes happy tears* he is just awesome.

One of my top five favorite fix-it fics. Love this!… (mer)

At the 86% part in 'If You Want to Be Free, Be Free' by mia6363 the sheriff officially broke my heart.

“For years…” John’s voice broke and it took three breaths to regain his composure. “For years I didn’t know if you were dead or alive. If you were stolen, ran away, I… I don’t think I slept for a long time. Food didn’t have taste.” Stiles’s breath hitched and he curled in on himself, hiding his eyes from John. “Hey,” John shook Stiles gently, “Stiles, look at me.” Stiles peered at him, his eyes red and weary. “I can breathe again. I can taste again… because I know you’re all right.”

I think "bittersweet" is the word I'm looking for to describe this fic. Beautifully bittersweet.
