Great plot, great chemistry between the MCs, really good writing. I’m looking forward to reading the next one, which is already in my kobo but this one was intense and I need my heart to slow down a little first 😉

This is the third book in the ongoing saga of private investigator, Jillienne Kidd and school principal, Jessica Blake. Each book deals with a fresh mystery so is stand-alone in that sense, but the relationship is progressing, so if you want to follow the romance you may want to read the two previous books before starting this one.

This is quite an interesting read. We give it a 3.5, rounded down to 3.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, the title being what it was. For some reason I sorta got the idea in my head from the title that it was going to be a kinda lighthearted romance through Catholic school halls. Yep, I was really, really wrong about that. But not in a bad way. It was a serious book that was well plotted with a mystery that held my interest. And there was some lighthearted stuff in there too, just not as much as I thought there would be.

It's a mystery that takes place at a Catholic school, St. Marguerite's. Jil, a PI, gets assigned by her boss Padraig to go in undercover as a teacher at the school. The school board has hired Padraig's agency to find those on the staff of St. Marguerite's who are participating in 'UnCatholic conduct'. When she starts her undercover assignment she meets Jessica, who's St. Marguerite's principal. Needless to say that the topic of 'UnCatholic conduct' according to the contract that all the teachers/administrators sign definitely becomes seriously complicated for Jessica and Jil as the novel goes on. But then another story appears as well, and that's when the book gets really interesting.

It was a good read. As I said, the mystery held my interest and had some surprising twists and turns. The romance was also good, and I wasn't always entirely sure where it would end up either. (I assumed it would be a happy ending, but, you never know).

The only thing that really confused me was the ending. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be a philosophical open ended thing, or if this'll be a series of books, but I felt like the ending left me hanging, and not in a good, 'The Lady, or The Tiger?' sorta way.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of Bold Strokes Books.

Here’s another novel with some super strong women that you might enjoy. Weight of Earth is a story about generations of women who are trying to balance the demands of everyday life with their exceptional abilities. Ella, the main character, has had a tumultuous and mysterious relationship with her mother. She’s never really understood why her mother had dark days when she was young. All she knows is that 12 years ago, her mother turned her back on her sister, and their lives have never been the same. When she fortuitously meets William, a special-needs boy, she learns how strong family bonds can be and how much love a heart can hold. In spite of her cold relationship with her mother—or perhaps because of it?—she commits herself to helping William, and in doing so, gives him a friend and champion for life. Ella’s world is shaken, however, when Zeth enters the picture. How does he seem to know her so intimately when she doesn’t even understand herself? Why does he seem to hold so many answers when she hasn’t even begun to formulate the questions?

Even though I found the characters difficult to follow at first (the story switches between events in the past and present), by the time I was a quarter of the way in, I was hooked. Ella really touched my heart with her effortless acceptance of and commitment to William. Mikayne’s portrayal of their relationship proves that it sometimes really does take only one person to turn your life around. I don’t know if I would have enough courage or compassion to do what she does in the novel (though I hope someday I might), which is why I admire the character of Ella very much. The magic that is woven throughout the threads of the story is what really lured me in. I like the conflict created whenever censorship or simply having to hide one’s nature is in question. In Weight of Earth, you get a variety of strong female characters all with unique abilities that, in some way or another, are latent, tempered, or repressed. Imagine what will happen when they’re put together in the same room! I’m not sure if another novel is planned to continue the story, but I’d read it for sure. What would you do if you had special abilities you couldn’t share with the world?

There is a burgeoning romance between Ella and Zeth in this story, which leads to a memorable night for them, the description of which would not be appropriate for some younger readers. This novel explores more subtle magic and elements of the occult rather than overt spell-casting, so it’s a good starting point for discussing some lesser-known (at least to many kids) arts like divination, telepathy, and the like. One of the greatest values of this story is the relationship between Ella and William, so for some readers, perhaps instead of having them read the entire book, the passages that depict Ella and William’s interactions can be highlighted. They’re definitely great opportunities to highlight traits like empathy, kindness, and acceptance (three of the virtues-of-the-month for the school board in our area) that can be used of interdisciplinary activities.
