Om författaren

Yukio Mishima, the pseudonym for Hiraoka Kimitake, was born in Tokyo in 1925. His work covers many styles: poetry, essays, modern Kabuki ja Noh drama, and novels. Among his masterpieces are The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, and the four-volume novel Sea of Fertility, which outlines the Japanese visa mer experience in the 20th century. Each of the four volumes in this series has a distinct title--Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn, and Five Signs of a God's Decay--and they were published over a six-year period, from 1965-1970. Mishima's plays include Tenth Day Chrysanthemum, and the Kabuki piece The Moon Like a Drawn Bow. Although Mishima was been nominated three times for the Nobel Prize for Literature, he never received it. Nevertheless, he is considered by many critics as one of the most important Japanese novelists of the 20th century. Yukio Mishima died by his own hand in 1970, committing seppuku (ritual disembowelment). (Bowker Author Biography) visa färre

Kort biografi
Three-time winner of the Yomiuri Prize (1956 in literature, 1958 and 1961 in drama), winner of the Shinchosha Prize (1954), the Kunio Kishida Award (1956), the Mainichi Art Award (1964), and the Ministry of Education's Arts Festival Award (1965), "Mishima Yukio was probably the most prodigiously endowed Japanese writer of the twentieth century. Although he was only forty-five when he died, under spectacular circumstances that brought him worldwide fame, he had already completed a more voluminous oeuvre than most writers who live twice that long. His writings extended to every genre. Although he was best known as a novelist, he excelled also as a short-story writer. His works of fiction ranged from the philosophic to the farcical; he could write in whatever style was appropriate to each. He published numerous essays on literary, political, cultural and purely journalistic topics. He was also the most successful playwright of his generation." (Donald Keene. “Forward: Mishima’s Kabuki Plays” in “Mishima on Stage.” Ed. Laurence Kominz. Ann Arbor: Center for Japanese Studies 2007, viii–x.)

Once again, I wasn’t sure how well I was going to like this one at first. Unlike other books I have read by Mishima in the past, this is strict first person — as if written by a person looking back over their life and trying to explain it to the reader. While first person can be more intimate, somehow I felt more distant from the narrator, especially earlier in the book when he is looking back over his childhood.

It in his early adulthood, when the narrator is convincing himself that he is his mask — that what he should want and what he does want are one in the same, that I was finally all in. I found it such a compelling portrayal of that compulsive heteronormativity — that everyone else assumes he is straight and he himself assumes/convinces himself he is straight and the cracks at the seams are getting wider but his circular self-assessments just get tighter. And even the narrator’s occasional admissions of the difference of his desires are so hemmed in by the rigid models of “inversion” — there are only two types of invert, according the authorities of the time, or at least those available to our narrator.

So yes, in the end, I loved this. I am getting more and more curious about reading more about Mishima as a person. I shall have to see if there are any good biographies available.

Mishima says Sade's wife left him because his body became ugly in prison. Which is fine enough for an answer.

- strangest feeling that I’ve read this book/heard this story before after coming to the ending where Satoko enters the convent. Where though?

- contemplating why so many authors set their stories amongst the upper class, in this case quasi royalty. Intended to make the story less mundane by removing all the economic barriers and inconveniences faced by normal people? Easy to write when characters don’t have to go to work or worry about the financial effects of chasing your beloved across the country?

- Mishima gives 18-19 year old boy too much credit here, find it hard to believe that Honda would be reflecting on medieval European law, or the Siamese princes giving lectures on Buddhism

- reading in translation of course, but a lot of the language seemed so overwrought and the description tedious. I’m all for long passages “about nothing” where we can simply appreciate the poésie of the language but do normal people really think in term of the heady metaphors Mishima ascribes to them here? Not in my experience, though I haven’t spent much time with early 20th century aristocrats either
