I probably wouldn't have chosen to read this book on my own, but a friend I trust recommended it to me. I'm by no means a fast reader anymore, but I finished this one in record time.
As a longtime fan of classical mythology, I appreciate the Roman-esque setting in the book. The characters were compelling.
It's a little disappointing to see the major plot twist in a book coming from more than halfway through, but there were enough other things going on that it wasn't off-putting.

I've got my copy of TSS ready to go.… (mer)

This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't the book I was expecting after reading TSC. I was really hoping for a continuation of the story rather than a retelling. The added details were nice, but I don't think it warranted an entire book.

I liked Leila's attempts to investigate the plot and reading about some of the characters we're only briefly introduced to in TSC.

Learning more about Leila's abilities and heritage was neat even if the sudden revelation of her ability to control the weather was strange. It only happens once in the book and it kind of comes out of nowhere. If her emotions had such an impact on the weather, I don't know why it matters if she's inside or outside.
It makes sense that she has to be outdoors to bless the realm.

I'd actively disliked Cosima in TSC. I loathed her in this, but that's the point so awesome.

Delphi and Pippa are the best characters in this book.

Release your burdens. Pour yourself out to me. If I can be nothing else, let me be your refuge.

Hooooo shit. That was a lot. I have thoughts flying every which way on this thing, positive and negative, so I'm gonna talk to myself for a while, don't mind me. I love Jenna's writing advice and vlogs and it was an honour to read something of hers! There was her trademark all over the damn thing.

the plot bits
to begin...TSC is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting books I've read in ages. It's hard to draw me into tension, especially draw me in so many times, but this is one of the books greatest strengths. It's paced at a breakneck speed, but knows when to ease onto the brakes when you're getting tired. I'll admit I felt at about 70% that it was feeling longggg (it could have been pared down quite a lot with a lot of redundant scenes and LONGGG CONVERSATIONS about nothing), but still, all the heart-racing-page-flipping tension made it worth it.

The challenges were diverse and fascinating, the players were unexpected, there were a lot of shock factors...I loved those bits the most. I honestly expected to like the trials the least so I was super surprised!!

Unfortunately when it came to the people aspect of the plot...like the villains and the machinations and whatever...I was pretty unimpressed. I was spoiled on the final twist but still loved it, however it came so late that it didn't have time to be properly supported or explained and fell flat.

the people
jenna done did good. i've read a lot of reviews for this by now, and this seems to be a point of contention. Were the characters interesting and well-written or were they cardboard cut-outs?? I think Jenna did really well with what space she had - wasn't perfect, but hey. There were 20 men, y'all. How can one expect her to fully flesh out all of them? The ones who were given some proper time were really interesting and unique and I felt like I knew enough that I understood the constraints of the plot and I accepted it. (Okay, except for Raphael. I feel like he became relevant out of nowhere.)

I wish there was more love for the girls. I had heard so much hype about Delphi and Pippa that I was really excited for them to be fleshed out and that never happened. even Delphi's sexuality which was a huge talking point in Jenna's vlogs came up once. Did I lose a chapter? tf happened?

it's weird because with everyone I really enjoyed their presence, everyone was interesting and funny in their own way, but i want that extra step to be taken especially in a 500 page book

Villains were - okay listen, villains were so weak and bad and I don't care. I was in here SO EXCITED for Kaleo - a beautiful, sadistic, smooth-talker? HELLO? but man he was cringy as hell. He was useless, and predictable, and then he was cringy. He should have had a mustache to twirl. The Sovereign was [snores]. I think this is what I'm genuinely most disappointed on. They had some good moments but overall I was just watching these men who came out of a prepackaged villain container.

And now to bring it all back around. Flynn. Hello. Flynn was so good, all the good good character ingredients went into him. My expectations played a big part in this - I thought he was going to be the new best friend, the new chipper ally, but he wasn't. Tobias was constantly frustrated with him. He was a loser, an idiot, a self-obsessed maniac, and his fall was amaaaaazing. So satisfying. I wish that much of attention and interest went to the other characters. He's the only character in the whole thing that really changed, now that I think of it. it's ok I can thrive on this

the freaking dialogue
the 'stuck in my craw' section

There was another review in here that referred to the dialogue as 'cringy' and I mean unfortunately...yes. it was funny! it was jenna-certified really funny, snappy, and I enjoyed reading the conversations quite a lot. But. There was a lot weighing against it - some of which drove me nuts.

The first of which was cursing. man. ok. I slowly lost my sanity thanks to this. I'm fine with cursing in books, but it was constant. And so when it started to matter - when Tobias was insulting people he really shouldn't insult - it just fell flat. I'd been listening to these people throw the same curses around the whole time and all impact was hopelessly dulled. Also, everyone cursed the same. There were people of different rank in here, different origin, and yet they all felt like 'cock' was the best insult out there. 'Fucking cock' if they were feeling really creative. Ooh, maybe even 'cunt.' I got so tired. They all sounded the exact same and it sucked all the characterization out of them. Would it kill you to write 'damn'?!

Besides that, there was a lot of talking and sometimes the cheese got pretty gooey. I skimmed many a conversation between Tobias and Leila as it just meandered in a mushy conversation, unable to get to the point and the impact.

eh, well. ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh well........

anyways
really glad I bought this though. It was a really exciting ride and got me right in the Feels at the end, which is always a good thing. I think most of the technical aspects that failed could have been fixed with some tightening, and i'm still side-eyeing everyone who goes out of their way to talk about how this romance is so HEALTHY and PURE, but yes i enjoyed my trip to thessen!!!!

CW: death, scenes of a sexual nature, foul language and derogatory term usage

The Savior's Champion by Jenna Moreci is a monster. And I'm not referring to the page count.
Death is a huge part of this book, pretty much beginning the minute the tournament begins. You'll find yourself covering your eyes with your hands, not wanting to know how it ends but unable to let it go. You'll root for the main character and cheer when things work out. And then.... the end will leave you wanting more.
I hope Jenna Moreci is working on the sequel because I'm looking forward to it!
