Powerful in its simplicity, this books reminds young readers that we all share similar feelings, both good and bad, and that it’s okay to discuss our range of emotions.

This clever board book will appeal to both adults and children with its mingling of shapes, colors, and animals.

On the left side of the spread is the text of the page and a small image of an animal. On the right is a large shape. The text combines the two, "When a lazy turtle meets an oval, they become a..." and the following spread shows a cute combination of the two, "Slow-val".

Each shape cleverly combines the animal, shape, and description; the turtle is a large green oval, legs and tail tucked around itself, compared to a school of darting green fish. A woodpecker flattens itself against a trapezoid to become a "tap-tap-ezoid" as it taps on the bark. An orange-brown dog squats into a hexagon to become a "scent-agon" as it sniffs for a cat.

Some of the shapes are advanced for the audience - trapezoid, hexagon - but little ones can still enjoy the funny sounds - and the funny combinations of animals that result! The brightly-colored illustrations are very attractive and the text simple and brisk.

Verdict: A delightful addition to any board book collection; Recommended.

I picked this up for the library because the bright cover was attractive and was delighted to discover the interior is equally whimsical.

Each spread shows two improbably colored animals and poses the question: what would happen if they were mixed? The following spread shows the result. A giant, vivid blue whale plummets through the sky, landing on a startled yellow lion and creating… a rather glum-looking “green whion.” The mixes get more and more weird, a “turquoise rhortoise,” a “chartreuse kangamoose,” and my favorite, a “violet brizzly.” The third to the last spread shows a swirling ring of mixed and unmixed animals which combine to form a marvelous creature on the second to last spread. It’s unnamed, but has blue wings, a yellow trunk, green elephant legs, stripy red body, and so on. The final spread shows spots demonstrating the different color combinations, with a red monkey juggling a few extra balls.

The vivid colors add excitement and interest to the quirky book. While the combinations are too advanced for most toddlers, they can still enjoy the combinations and colors and will be delighted with the wacky animals that are created.

Verdict: A bright new entry in the world of board books, sure to fly off your shelves and delight little ones. Recommended.

Cat is very hungry but he is a finicky eater. He knows that dogs eat dog food and fish eat fish food but he doesn’t want to eat cat food. He gives cat food and overall rating of, “Yuck”. He surveys the foods of other animals and finds that their food is even less appealing. Cat talks to Turtle, Fox and Chimp but their foods are wiggly, bouncy or bite. Cat talks to Elephant, Whale and Lion but their foods are dry, too hard to pronounce and who knows what else. When Cat finally meets a Mouse in search of something good to eat for himself, Cat finally figures out what he wants to eat.
Neal’s mixed media illustrations are fun and reminiscent of Chuck Jones animation art. The uncluttered space puts the focus on the expressions of the animal characters (and their food).
