Zora Neale Hurston was born in 1901 in Eatonville, Fla. She left home at the age of 17, finished high school in Baltimore, and went on to study at Howard University, Barnard College, and Columbia University before becoming one of the most prolific writers in the Harlem Renaissance. Her works visa mer included novels, essays, plays, and studies in folklore and anthropology. Her most productive years were the 1930s and early 1940s. It was during those years that she wrote her autobiography Dust Tracks on a Road, worked with the Federal Writers Project in Florida, received a Guggenheim fellowship, and wrote four novels. She is most remembered for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. In 2018, her previously unpublished work, Barracoon: The Story of the Last Black Cargo, was published. She died penniless and in obscurity in 1960 and was buried in an unmarked grave. In 1973, her grave was rediscovered and marked and her novels and autobiography have since been reprinted. I alla fall på ytan är detta inte en historia om rasism, eller ens relationer mellan svarta och vita. Båda sakerna finns där, men bara i vissa episoder, och dessa är kanske inte det viktigaste med boken. Det är istället Janie, en ung svart kvinna i början av förra seklet som genom tre äktenskap lär sig vad hon vill, och inte vill ha i livet: hon blir först bortgift med en välbeställd jordbrukare som vill ha hennes muskelkraft. Hon rymmer, och gifter sig sig igen med en man med drömmar om makt och välstånd, som är med och organiserar ett helsvart samhälle utanför Orlando. Han vill ha henne som trofé och någon att visa sig förståndig intill. Hon blir änka, ekonomiskt oberoende och fortfarande vacker, men gifter sig inte med de välansedda män som åter uppvaktar henne för hennes status, utan istället med den yngre, lättsinnige Tea Cake, trots varningar om att han mest vill råna henne, men som får henne att skratta och känna sig som en människa.
Feminism snarare än medborgarrättsrörelse, alltså: rasismen finns där, bland annat i form av en dam med blandat blod som desperat försöker höja sig över de helsvarta, och i hur de svarta nästan alla är fattiga daglönare som kan tvingas till arbete efter den katastrof som utgör klimax. Kanske kan någon mer slängd i teori också visa på hur den också inskärpt könsrollerna: först hur Janie tvingats in i något för ekonomisk trygghet, och sedan hur viktigt det är med minsta spår av status som står att vinna. Mest av allt är det dock en berättelse om ett människoöde, ibland hårt och plågsamt, ibland lekande lätt, men i slutändan bärarens eget.… (mer)
