Lyrical poems about different animals and birds of Alaska, like the raven, caribou, sea urchin, and dolphins, in two-page spreads with a poem on the left-hand side and a wonderful black and white wood engraving on the right. Nickerson humanizes disapperances in a way Nancy Grace dehumanizes them. Perhaps that's why I've read it so slowly. There's nothing like someone or something that can have a civilizing effect on you.

How fascinating to read about an Inuit woman who can speak English like a cultured Victorian lady. I'm not certain I agree that Tookolito "saved the Polaris expedition," but having survived it is quite remarkable. Imagine clinging to a melting ice floe in heavy seas, wondering if you'll make it back to land alive...

Well worth reading this as an adventure story. So refreshing to find details about the invisible women way back in history.

Trying to stop reading this book was like trying to take an afternoon nap but there's a dog barking outside. It didn't engage me and I'd be dying to put it down but once in a while there'd be a good line or two and thusly I got dragged back in.
